Hot ONT Box!

Hi

We've just had our new full fibre installation and I've noticed that the ONT wall-box seems hot to the touch. Is this normal?Huh

@KatKaty Mine is 'warm' towards the top. Is yoursi in direct sunlight or a warm/hot room?

Re: Hot ONT Box!

It's out of direct sunlight and it's the front that's hot. I rang PlusNet and was told that this is normal because it has a mains supply direct, but that it will cool a little with use...?Huh

Re: Hot ONT Box!

As I said, and PN support kind of confirmed, it will be a little warm. How 'hot' do you think it is?

@KatKaty

Mine does feel warm to touch which is to me is normal. I suspect the maximum operating temperature would be at least up to 40C.

it has a mains supply direct

I question this comment as it has an external power unit, where ac is converted to 12v DC

The ONT it's self would drop 12v DC down to the required voltages to 3.5 or 5 v dc. which would create heat.

Re: Hot ONT Box!

Sorry if I wasn't clear: by saying it has a 'mains supply direct' what I was meaning was that the ONT box has a supply from the 3-pin mains via a transformer plug and DC cable into the box.

I was trying to make the point that it differs from the previous 'copper' cable connection box (which had no power supply going to it via a 3-pin mains plug).

I'll check it again when I'm home later. It's just that the ONT box felt significantly hotter to the touch than I was expecting. I'm obviously concerned about any item that might induce a fire in my house.

However, since both the PN technical support and yourselves think this is not unusual then I'll bow to your better judgement. Having never had a fibre installation in any property I lived in, until now, I wasn't aware exactly how the components would behave.

Thanks

Re: Hot ONT Box!

@KatKaty As the phone cable which was previously supplying your Broadband and phone service was totally different technology, it did not require any power within your home. With Full Fibre, the light signal which carries the data needs to be converted to electronic signals which your router and computer understand. This 'conversion' is done within the ONT, but it has to be powered to do this.

I'm not aware of an ONT causing a fire, and in any case, your fridge/freezer (for example) gets warmer during a freezing cycle.
