bit off topic from the OP, maximum expected speed for a Hub two on 2.4Ghz WiFi 4 (802.11n) would be around 72 Mbps.

Your contract is for the speed to the property not what the WiFi can deliver.

Edit: to be clear this is with a 20MHz channel width.

Then there appears to be (at least to me and some others) some confusion over speed via Wi-Fi vs contracted speed to router.

Which is which? What speed is Wi-Fi operating at?

Perhaps it's just me but, from the provided information, I can't see if the problem is with Wi-Fi or with the PON connection.

The above is my regular kind of result, give or take the odd Mb/s. This is a wireless ipv6 result over wireless, and is constant, no matter what time of day I run it.

If you read my first post, you will note the OP forget he was using a works PC VPN, which nulls the tests he has performed so far.

He needs to provide tests again with no VPN.

i know it's WiFi not cable like you asked for, but these tests are with works laptop VPN on, then run again when disconnected. Works VPN is faster, I don't get it. Anyway, will try with NO VPN and ethernet cable later, thank you.

The answer: Yes @andyt1970, your download speed of 300Mbps has to be measured on a wired connection, not wireless.

...Absolutely!

As I sought to demonstrate with my post above about Wi-Fi. Though, very ironically, I used a 5 GHz Wi-fi connection - rather than a cable - to demonstrate it. 🤣

(Because I knew that in my case the 5 GHz Wi-Fi link speed was much higher than my contracted PON speed of 150 Mbps)

If testing with a wired connection is proving difficult due to the layout in your property, it is possible to set up a PPPoE connection on your laptop. The ONT LAN port connects directly to the testing laptop RJ45 port, needs to be cat5e or above cable. You will need to ensure the network interface supports 1000 Mbps connection

Be warned using a USB2 port a USB3 RJ45 LAN adapter may not achieve speeds of 300 Mbps due to hardware restrictions of USB2.

For windows 10/11

1. Open Network Settings
	Press the Windows Key + I to open Settings.
	On the left sidebar, click Network & internet.
	Select Dial-up from the list of options.

2. Create the New Connection
	Click on Set up a new connection. This will launch a classic pop-up window (the "Set Up a Connection or Network" wizard).
	Choose Connect to the Internet and click Next.
	If you are already connected to a different network, select Set up a new connection anyway.
	When asked "How do you want to connect?", select Broadband (PPPoE).

3. Enter Your Credentials
	User name: Enter the exact username <- this is your members centre login with @plusdsl.net; example yourusername@plusdsl.net
	Password: Enter the password provided <- this is your members centre password
	Connection name: You can name this anything you like, such as "Home Fiber" or "My ISP".
	Check the box Remember this password so you don't have to type it every time.
	Click Connect.

You should now be connect directly to your broadband connection and able to run speedtest and browse bypassing the Hub two.

Afternoon all,

Thanks for the replies and apologies I haven't been able to post sooner. I am about to run 4 different speedtests on my works laptop via a Cat 5e Ethernet cable and laptop VPN not logged into.

I'll post the results in a minute. And this works laptop is the only device we have (other than my desktop PC upstairs) that I can test on.

Okay, here are the results.

Definitely faster without VPN on and using Ethernet cable connection as expected, but still such differences in speed. I have no idea why the Ookla speedtest always says Amazon above my IP address.

I assume my works laptop is connecting at 5Ghz not 2.4Ghz looking at that.

 

I know my mobile can only connect to 2.4Ghz, the HIVE thermostat in the hall will be 2.4Ghz. The PCI-E WifFi card in my 6 year old Chillblast desktop PC can only handle 2.4Ghz also, which is a real shame.

I think our TV in the lounge, NOW TV sticks and Amazon FIRE tablets we have connect all connect on 5Ghz, but not sure. How can I check and can I set them to only connect to 5Ghz? Same as this works laptop. Sorry for rambling again......

They are all showing above the 165Mb guaranteed minimum speed I should get (apart from FAST speedtest that never works for me), but I'd argue nowhere near the 300Mbps speed package I pay for. How come they sell you 300Mbps but can get away with the user only getting just above the minimum? That's a speed just above half of what they sell you and pay for 😳

Is 165Mb minimum speed they guarantee the same as 165Mbps? Must be just the way they word it to add to the confusion.

And this isn't the information some of you asked for but I couldn't resist out of curiosity, THIS is a Think Broadband speedtest result with laptop back in the dining room and NO ETHERNET cable, just WiFi. Madness. I just don't understand broadband speeds and how this is the fastest test result I have ever had using WiFi on the works laptop...... 😵

@andyt1970 My suspicion is your home environment (and the VPN), but maybe @MisterW  / @Dan_the_Van  can help you more here. Your laptop can obviously handle the speed - no surprise - but there are obviously some constraints somewhere.

That would indicate your VPN is still active and your connection is still being routed via AWS.

edit: have you checked the IP to see if its reporting a Plusnet one ?

You are disconnecting the WiFi connection when you testing with ethernet cable?

What does https://whatismyipaddress.com/ report your IP Address ISP information as when speedtest shows Amazon?

On the Hub two if you look at ->Home -->My devices it will detail which devices are connected to which band.

Stream devices usually by default should be preset to prefer 5GHz signal by default, my LG TV, Roku do.

I would expect you should achieve your full broadband speed 300 Mbps with your WiFi adapter aggregate speed being 650/650 Mbps, assuming you are close to the Hub.

When performing a speedtest with WiFi you really need a silent network (only the testing device connected) to ge a true picture,

Bandwidth can only be used once, so if someone is streaming something, then you perform a speedtest you will get a depreciated result.
