Full Fibre 300 - slow download speeds. Am I missing something?

Hi,

So our Plusnet 2 hub is on a high shelf next to the bottom of the stairs with a short ethernet cable connecting it to the ONT.

We are on the Full Fibre 300 package.

The WiFi speeds are always terrible, so ran some tests.

Photo's below show WiFi speedtest results on my works laptop, then again when connected to Hub 2 via ethernet cable.

WiFi properties page shows this:

And Ethernet properties (when connected) shows this:

Does this look right? Other half doesn't want unsightly ethernet cable around the house so I work from home in the dining room, just off the hall, no more than 15 feet from router in the hall.

My desktop PC up in the bedroom also has terrible Wi-Fi download speeds - usually 40Mbps - but I can't access it right now so might edit this to show speedtest results on that later). That was connected via ethernet cable to Hub 2 in the same room in our old property, but again, can't connect it via ethernet cables in this house [ THE RULES ! ]

My basic mobile phone NOKIA C21+ has even lower speeds than the laptop WiFi even when stood right next to the router.

Maybe I can't see the wood for the trees but I'm disappointed with the SLOW DOWNLOAD SPEEDS and inconsistency 🤔

Might have to replace the PCI-E WiFi card in bedroom desktop PC as can't cope with such slow WiFi.

Any suggestions please? (Get a new other half is not a valid response!)

Thanks

WiFi and Ethernet connection results from logging into Hub 2 and doing PlusNet Hub Two Manager > Broadband performance test.

Hoping that's them and not me!

Hi, thanks jab1,

Didn't realise images get held first. Hopefully not too long for you to wait.

Just googled my phone and the NOKIA C21+ says its 4G only, so assume that is slow?

Be back later on, cheers

EDIT: Latest Ookla WiFi speed test, this laptop is taking ages to load websites now ☹️

That went yonks ago! I use the PN recommended(?) speed test: Fast.com

Some posters on here turn their noses up at it, many other speed testers are available...

Re: Full Fibre 300 - slow download speeds. Am I missing something?

@andyt1970 firstly , Wifi speed tests are pointless in establishing whether or not there's a basic connection issue.

A wired test is the only useful information.

Tests using fast.com as @pvmb  suggests or speedtest.net (Ookla) are a good start...

Thanks.

The top 2 dark blue ones are Ookla.

This is Fast.com WiFi result, something is clearly wrong with this set up Sad

The top 2 dark blue ones are Ookla.

AFAICS they're Wireless tests!

This is Fast.com WiFi result,

Forget WIFI, ONLY wired tests are useful in establishing whether the basic connection is working properly!

Once we've established that, then we can start to look at why Wifi speeds are slow...

@andyt1970

"Photo's below show WiFi speedtest results on my works laptop, then again when connected to Hub 2 via ethernet cable."

The speedtest, you say you are using your works laptop, are they over a VPN?

I ask as speedtest does not show your ISP as being plusnet

Yes. Unless, as in my case, you know the Wi-Fi link is connecting at much higher speeds that the provided (ahem!) 'Broadband' service - 150Mbps in my case, as opposed to Wi-Fi 5Ghz link speeds of typically around 600-700 Mbps.

Images 2, 4 & 6 are the ethernet test results.

Yes, I have to connect to my works VPN, forgot about that. Will try Fast.com test using ethernet only later when OH won't see me with a cable and shout "You're NOT having bloody wires across this house".

Thanks, back later!

Re: Full Fibre 300 - slow download speeds. Am I missing something?

@andyt1970 Images #2 and #6  show abysmal speeds for a wired connection, image #4 is better, but still not what I would expect from a wired connection on a 300 service. However, if these are via your works laptop with an 'always on VPN, then maybe that is part of  the issue.

Do you or your other half have a personal laptop with ethernet?

Re: Full Fibre 300 - slow download speeds. Am I missing something?

Well now...

All this, plus some domestic contingencies - meaning that currently I have the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi switched on at the router as well as the normal 5GHz only - prompted me to try an experiment I have had in mind for some while.

I switched off the 5GHz Wi-Fi in the Hub 2 router to see what would happen. One thing that happened was I needed to reboot the PC... But when it came back up again it was indeed connected at 2.4GHz. So I ran the Fast.com speed test, normally I get a solid 150 Mbps download speed (the 'Broadband' contracted speed) every time. This time I got:

34 Mbps
43 Mbps
44 Mbps
42 Mbps

So, less than one third of the contracted speed. Very instructive!
