Openreach ONT Boxes

Hello checking around on the internet and I'm sad to see OpenReach have been using 1gig ONT boxes on installation which is rather sad indeed.

Does anyone know if they are now installing 2.5GbE ONT boxes on new installs? And/Or will BT Install a 2.5GbE one if you request it?  Thanks.

Re: Openreach ONT Boxes

Seems not since I've been looking around and even people on the 1.6 gig speeds are having clowns install 1GbE ONT's installed.

I don't know the answer to your question, however, Openreach seem to be planning to introduce even faster than 2.5GHz ONTs.

Re: Openreach ONT Boxes

I would hazard a guess that's for upcoming connection speed upgrades since we're very slow compared to EU standards.

That reads as more money wasted on things not needed in a domestic setting.  What tangible benefits do these higher speeds as so much more cost really deliver?

Not sure what and 'EU standard is' but for median speed the UK is pretty much bang in the middle, faster than the likes of Germany, Italy and Belgium.

Not really, not at all.
https://www.opensignal.com/2023/10/12/european-markets-show-significant-disparity-in-broadband-user-...

The alt nets are the only ones being competitive in the UK.

Most of Europe are on a 1:1 contention ratio, upload speed is completely ignored in England for no good reason at all.

And I'm sorry but that kind of thinking is why we're among the worst.

Re: Openreach ONT Boxes

That’s a meaningless set of stats from over two years ago.  It does not examine the difference between availability and average deployment nor overlay actual need.

Why does a domestic residential setting need super fast upload?  There’s the same sentiment here of folks wanting a car which can do zero to sixty in four seconds - because that’s seen as best performance - when there’s no need or opportunity to do zero to sixty that quick.  It’s more about stroking egos.

Re: Openreach ONT Boxes

It has absolutely nothing to do with ego's at all.  Anyone who streams or uploads files, such as sending videos to family and friends who are no longer in England it's rather important.

It's also idiotic when most of Europe is on a 1:1 Down/Up speed.   My parents who now live in France in an old cottage in the middle of absolutely nowhere can get 4gig both ways, 1gig both ways or 500mbit both ways.

This is why the Altnets do the same.   Also the car anology is incredibly poor, Comparing a vehicle that has speed limits by Law vs the Internet that does.

What it does is make file, video and photo sharing much quicker, and again as I said the US and EU and Asia all mostly* have symetrical speeds.   Poland has had 1gig up and down for over 10 years.

It's worth noting my ex who's in an AltNet area now has the option for 7000mbit which is also 7000mbit upload.

It's also about perspective and what you do.  900mbit for me is already weak sauce in terms of speed,  Virgin Media here is perma 1150mbit ,but I prefer upload speed and PlusNet offers 10mbit up more than Virgin does on Gig1.  So there in itself your entire arguement is utterly wrong because I'm moving from a faster download for a quicker upload.

So don't comment about stroking Egos insinuating things about people you know nothing about, or their usage.  Or for the internet for that matter.  I'm not quite sure how you made it to "superuser" status being so aggresive on a Forum.... Talk about stroking egos' indeed.

Re: Openreach ONT Boxes

Out of interest. How would you define "super fast upload"?

I'm looking at some upload stats on my connection. The data available to me indicates that the upload speed is intermittent.

Re: Openreach ONT Boxes

Super fast to me would be 1gig+ upload.

But since altnets offer 2000 down and 2000 up for cheaper than Plusnets 900 package you have to ask yourself what BT is actually doing with all this money they're making.

Re: Openreach ONT Boxes

So we are getting all hot under the collar about uploading / downloading a file in 2 minutes as opposed to say 8 minutes which will take 30 minutes to view?  Yup your argument is indeed convincing.  What will you do with the saved six minutes?

Re: Openreach ONT Boxes

Time is money, and the only one getting hot and annoyed seems to be you.

Life is too short to be sat waiting when you can pay and have one less thing to worry about. Would like to see you send 100GB of video to Family after a Birthday party on BT speeds compared to altnet 2gig up. Because you would really know what you're in about then.
