I thought he was having issues with telnet in a windows command shell and he then had issues posting the error message which you were assisting with or I might be wrong.

Dan, so did I, until I read the last few posts. Unfortunately, I use Firefox  on all my devices, so have no knowledge of Safari on Apple.

Wish I'd not bothered trying to help, to be honest.

John, all I was saying telnet needs to be enabled in windows.

You can try putty if you are worried about the error messages https://putty.org/  

create a session as such

This is getting confusing. I started this request for help on advice from Plusnet help staff who are unable to fix my newsgroups connection.
The telnet (whatever that is) bit only came up when someone here advised trying to connect to it, the image attachment problem (which I still don’t see a way of doing on my iPhone) only came up when I wanted to post a screenshot of the telnet error message.

Okay, I've downloaded Putty from the link you gave me. What now? It says "No key" wants to generate one from several options!

You need to run the putty app not the putty key generator, windows key and then search for putty.

Click on Open and that will connect to news.plus.net a sucessful connection would look like

That suggests your connection to the news group service is good.
Do you get an error message with newsgroups or not getting any stores?

That link, https://putty.org/   takes me to a page with a multitude of Putty options. Not knowing what they all were I opted for the first that downloaded that key generator. You then said to get the app, so I looked on Windows app store and sure enough one option was Putty app. Running that as per your instructions gave the required result. Thank you.

Strangely, I have just successfully connected to, downloaded messages from and replied to a newsgroup via Thunderbird! All perfectly working for the first time in weeks 🙂

Fingers crossed it stays that way.
