problem with redirecting emails - help please!

Sorry if this is so obvious that everyone groans but I've been trying to redirect my PlusNet emails to gmail because I find that webmail is slow and often doesn't load.

I went to Redirects and tried to set up a redirect for <username>@<username>.plus.com but it won't let me - it says something about it being my primary account.

What do I do?

Re: problem with redirecting emails - help please!

You can’t have a redirect for an address that has a mailbox attached.
What you can do is get gmail to collect your PN emails.

I have done this and it works fine.

Thanks, Dvorak,

It seems to rather defeat the whole point of having redirects...

But I'll try what you suggest.

Re: problem with redirecting emails - help please!

Fix

Well, I actually seem to have sorted the problem by accident rather than design.

I had set up an alias <Albert>@<username>.plus.com

I deleted this.

Then I put <Albert>@<username>.plus.com into the 'redirect' box (on the 'redirect' tab of 'manage my mail') and redirected that (apparently defunct) address to my gmail account.

I don't know why it works but it does. And I've not had to do anything at the gmail end.

Perhaps I should patent this method.

Re: problem with redirecting emails - help please!

I don't know why it works but it does

It works because there is now no mailbox associated with the email address. As @dvorak  said earlier , you cannot redirect if there is a mailbox for the address. An alias is just another name for the assocoated mailbox.
