Webmail first use oddity

To help diagnose an issue elsewhere here, I've just set up a new email account and went straight into it with Webmail.  The first thing webmail does is ask for the user's name and email address.  The email address pre-presented was...

postmaster@account_name+mailbox_name.plus.com

Which on clicking OK the user is advised is not valid.  However...

fred@mailbox_name.plus.com

was readily accepted.

  • Why offer an option to the user which is valid?
  • Why accept input (an email address) which is not valid?

Which on attempting to use (send and email) generates...

I assume you mean *invalid?

This functionality was introduced with the latest Roundcube upgrade, and to be honest is much better than what came before it. Previously, users were not prompted for their sending address at all so every account ended up pre-populated with the the sender address <username>@<username>.plus.com (which of course, isn't necessarily the customer's email address). This wouldn't have prevented sending, but customers often contacted us to ask why they weren't receiving email replies Wink

The pop-up isn't very graceful where additional mailboxes are concerned.

If you log into a default mailbox using the username:

If you log into an additional mailbox using <username>+<mailbox>:

If you log into a mailbox using a fully qualified email address as the username:

  • Why accept input (an email address) which is not valid?

It's 'dumb' and will only check for valid format. There's nothing clever in the background that checks the address actually exists on our systems, or resolves.

Which on attempting to use (send and email) generates...

Expected behaviour. You're trying to send email from a domain that had no MX records, so it gets rejected by the avasouts:

C:\Windows\System32>nslookup -type=mx tester.plus.com
Server: UnKnown
Address: 212.159.8.120

*** UnKnown can't find tester.plus.com: Non-existent domain

I guess the simple alternative would be to remove the pre-populated info and have all options behave the same as logging in with a full email address?

Hi Bob,

Thank you for the prompt response. That would sound like a potential fix.

Re: Webmail first use oddity

My preference would be to present empty fields since even setting up the default address is likely to require overtyping of "postmaster".
