Spam, Spam, and more Spam

Since yesterday morning I've been flooded with spam about Meds and my device being hacked. One email every few minutes and still coming in. I've not had any issues recently so genuinely thought things might be getting better, which was a bit optimistic. Apparently not.

Still no news of when the migration will happen, or even an email from PlusNet to say that they are offloading email services to another provider - at least I can get information from this forum.

I did finally get an email to say that copper will be going away, although no specific dates mentioned.

Re: Spam, Spam, and more Spam

My mail box also has waves of similar scam / spam messages.

The analogue telephone service ends on or before 31 Jan 2027,  i.e. just 6 months remain.

Re: Spam, Spam, and more Spam

I've had the odd bit of spam in the past (more since Greenby entered the scene), but today alone I've had to delete over 100 spam emails - the same two messages. I had something like 30 or 40 of the exact same emails yesterday.

Re: Spam, Spam, and more Spam

Plusnet's  [-SPAM-] filter stopped working almost 12 months ago.

Greenby are not a source of spam and they do have quite an aggressive Spam Filter that is controlled from the Greenby portal at : www.greenby.com

Re: Spam, Spam, and more Spam

Thanks, but does that option work if I haven't been migrated? I would assume not.

I didn't say Greenby were the source of the spam, only that it has only become an issue since Plusnet decided to offload email to Greenby. If the Plusnet spam filters haven't been working for 12 months, well that explains the issues. Difficult to tell when there's almost no communications from Plusnet or Greenby about what's going on.

Re: Spam, Spam, and more Spam

There is an easy way to tell if you have been 'migrated', @john_chandler Enter your PN username and account  password here: https://greenby.com/ . If you have been moved, the Greenby portal will open, if you haven't, it won't recognise you.

Re: Spam, Spam, and more Spam

@jab1 - not recognised, as expected

About the only information I've ever had is that I would be amongst the last because I had, last year, hosting and domain with Plusnet. I moved those over months ago, so it's just the email left to migrate. It'd be nice to have a rough idea when the migration would happen, or even an idea as to what proportion of users have been migrated so far.

Re: Spam, Spam, and more Spam

I am with greenby

over last few weeks i have had tickets raised with the machines about whitelist / blacklists  that do not work

marking messages as not junk that does not work , every wednesday since last december have had to mark message as not spam still every wednesday it goes into junk also have it my whitelist

Have moaned about the terrible slowness of everything always sitting watching it loading or refreshing, timing out or sever error.

I have been told by the machine to use a third party WHY if i cannot get my emails direct how can any other do it better?

Also told to use a different browser, to sort out spam etc machine told me to set it at no2 , then another one  told me to set it at no4/5 ??????

they all agree its VERY FRUSTRATING

Re: Spam, Spam, and more Spam

@kenm

"I am with greenby"

So am I.

"marking messages as not junk that does not work"

Seems to work for me - but may need to be done more than once.

"every wednesday since last december have had to mark message as not spam still every wednesday it goes into junk also have it my whitelist"

The identical same message, or are there some slight differences? I have a message every Friday that was being junked. I marked them as Not Spam and they are no longer treated as possible spam. (Though  I also reduced the Greenby Spam filter threshold around the same time)

"Have moaned about the terrible slowness of everything always sitting watching it loading or refreshing, timing out or sever error."

Agree, the speed of operation of Greenby mail hosts is very variable at present. Am still hoping, after transition is complete, things will stabilise.

"I have been told by the machine to use a third party WHY if i cannot get my emails direct how can any other do it better?"

Not sure what's meant here.

"Also told to use a different browser, to sort out spam etc machine told me to set it at no2 , then another one told me to set it at no4/5 ??????"

A "browser" cannot sort out anything to do with spam. I take it the setting numbers refer to the level of the Greenby spam filter, accessible via your Greenby account.

"they all agree its VERY FRUSTRATING"

My question is: Why are the experiences of different users on Greenby apparently(!) so different?

My tentative and partial answer to my own question is that, with the various email problems that do exist for some users (after transfer to Greenby), their simple answer is always "It's Greenby!" - whatever "It" is.

Some of these issues (e.g. the variable server response time ) are down to Greenby - though, unlike others on here, I well remember similar issues before Greenby was even heard of! But others, such as spam, are IMO unlikely to have much to do with Greenby. Similarly, the failed delivery problem has a number of causes behind it - with the context being, IMO, the increasing security problems on the Internet being caused by AI agents and bots (so it's 'their fault') - c.f. Spam. This has caused email companies to raise and keep on raising their required standards for incoming mail (so, in a way it's 'their fault'). Also, Plusnet and Greenby haven't always kept up to speed with these changes (so, in a way it's 'their fault'). Also some Plusnet (i.e. BT) IP ranges have been identified as suspect - possibly because they have been used to send out spam (so, it's the fault of whoever caused the issue in the first place).

Currently, outgoing mail originating through Greenby is still being forwarded via Plusnet (BT) hosts. When the transition is complete presumably everything will be handled by Greenby hosts with their IP ranges. This might help improve things.

PLUS its 'the fault' of Plusnet users (or companies) who have allowed personal email addresses or account credentials to escape out into the Internet.

Be careful out there!

Re: Spam, Spam, and more Spam

I joined plusnet about 2010

I will admit it wasn't always perfect but it plodded on nicely for my light use it was

just plusnet no email clients ,thunderbird, or phone connections. Just Plusnet

But since being with Greenby it has been horrendously slow i sit there waiting for it delete a message

before i can open next one, luckily i am retired so able to waste my life doing it..

Like you i hope it will get better after migration ends which is their excuse for all the problems,

i hope so i don't relish the thought of moving everything BUT by then my free period will have expired,

I would not pay for what i am getting now from Greenby

My weekly email that's treated as junk is from Martins Money Tips ( martin lewis ) arrived ok with Plusnet for many years.
