Quote Port - pre populated with "587"
You need port 25 for the outgoing server.
And if you have sign in checked on the outgoing server then the username/password need to be your main username/password i.e the one you use to sign in to the plusnet portal.
You may find that outgoing mail via relay.plus.net doesn't work when connected to your mobile network in which case you need to send using the mobile network's smtp server.

However whilst I can email from my phone, and it appears as though sent from my plusnet email, I am not receiving any emails on my phone, despite them reaching my plusnet account.
Can you think of anything I have missed?
Thanks
Ian

Failing that , are you getting any errors reported when you try and get mail on your phone ?

I view my plusnet emails using window live on my pc. What do I need to do if as you suggest it is set up to delete emails from the plusnet server once transferred to my PC?
THanks
Ian

Heres what I have found worked for plusnet after searching the forums
In addition, there is a useful guide to setting up pop3 and imap on know your cell
POP icon - click
"Set Up email" heading:
Email address - I enter my email address
Password - I enter my usual plusnet password
click option for 'manual set up'
"Add new email acc" heading on next page:
It offers me three types of account to choose: 1) POP3 2)IMAp 3) exchange
I click imap option
asks for username - I have used username + mailbox
Password - it is pre populated, so I continue
Pop3 server - is pre populated with my username.plus.com - I change to "mail.plus.net"
Port - prepopulated with "143" - i was advised to use 125 by the technical team, however I found that 143 worked instead !
Security type - pre populated with "none"
Imap path prefix - prepopulated with optional
Delete email from server - pre populated with "never"
I click next and "checking incoming server settings" is displayed
after a moment or two the next page is headed"outgoing server settings"
SMTP server - pre populated with "my username.plus.com" - I change to "relay.plus.net"
Port - pre populated with "587", changed to 25
Security type - pre populated with "none"
Require sign in is is checked - I've left it checked
username - prepopulated with my main a/c username
password - prepopulated with my password
click next
"checking outgoing server settings " appears
then I get "set up finished".
You can now select Account options:
Email checking frequency (15 minutes by default),
Send email from this account by default (check box),
Notify me when email arrives (checkbox) -- make your selections and tap Next
you are then giving two final options
Give this account a name (optional)
Your name to be displayed on all outgoing messages
hope this helps

I am having email problems with my Nokia 5800 Vodafone phone. These are the settings I have been using for my outgoing emails but they just won't send. Sending using my hotmail account is fine as it uses the smtp.live.net outgoing server. With plus I have tried both relay.plus.net and send.vodafone.net to no avail. I read on line that I could use vodofone's portal 360.com as an alternative but this didn't work either. Below are my settings, can you help please???
Email address: as per my email address
User name: portal log in ID
Password: portal password
Outgoing server: smtp.vodafone.net
Access point: Contract WAP
Security: Off
Port: 25

smtp.360.com, SSL on, port 465
My phone does get as far as saying 'Sending..' but then comes up with an error.

My phone settings are as follows:
Username: "username@username.plus.com" - I left out the actual name - but I used my default mailbox name.
Password: "**************" (Verified three times and is correct)
IMAP Server: "imap.plus.net"
Security Type: "None"
Authentication type: "PLAIN"
Port: "110"
IMAP path prefix: "Automatic using NAMESPACE if available" - This seems greyed out though.
Use compression on network:
----- Box Mobile ticked
----- Box Wi-Fi ticked
----- Box Other ticked
When I click next, a page comes up "Checking incoming servers settings" and then a window comes up saying "Setup could not finish (after about half a minute).
Can anyone give me some idea where I am going wrong?
Ampers

Quote Username: "username@username.plus.com" - I left out the actual name - but I used my default mailbox name
That's your issue, the username should just be your username and not the email address.
So if your username is ampers, then sign in with ampers. If you have a mailbox called fred@ampers.plus.com then sign in with ampers+fred
