Sending & receiving Plusnet emails from a non-Plusnet broadband connection

Hello

We have had a Plusnet broadband connection for years, but speeds have been very poor due to distance from exchange.  Recently another provider has installed fibre to premises which we are now using, but they do not provide telephone connections.  Consequently, we have kept the Plusnet package in addition to the new service, however this has meant that, so far, we have been unable to send Plusnet emails using the fibre connection.  Is anyone able to tell me if it is possible to do this, and what settings to use?

 

I have contacted Customer Service but they have been unable to help other than to say they would escalate it to email support but given the lack of staff a response might take several weeks...

@WNL Welcome to the forums.

To send from a non-PN connection, you need to authenticate it. If you require help on how to do this, the first question is: what email client are you using?

We are using Outlook 365 on laptops and both Outlook and Mail on iPhones.

All you need to do then, Neil, is go t your settings, select 'outgoing server' and enter your details - username and password - when you get to a section on there which should at the moment be empty, but as I don't use 365 (never have), i don't know where this will be.

if you can't find or are unsure, post back and I'll try tagging someone who may know more.

Thanks. Have been changing settings through the Mail app in Windows Control Panel. I would send a picture, but not sure how to attach one…

The image is the various settings in the "Mail" section of the Windows Control Panel.  I have searched online for settings, changing them accordingly, but with no joy.  The settings shown are just the default ones, which do not work either.

Sorry Neil - As I said, not used a Windows mail client for 20+ years, and didn't realise what you said previously was incorrect, otherwise I would have responded earlier.

The settings I am referring to are actually within the picture - the shot bottom left. You need to tick 'My Outgoing server .....), ensure the 'use same settings...' below is ticked and then try that. As i said, i set authentication up a long time ago - and on Thunderbird, so my memory is hazy.

Again, if you hit problems, come back and I'll see if anyone else can help.

Unfortunately tried what you suggested, but doesn’t resolve issue.  Short term fix is to switch to the Plusnet Wi-Fi to check Plusnet emails and revert to the fibre Wi-Fi for everything else, but wanted a simpler solution, ideally.

OK, Neil, sorry it didn't work - maybe there is a setting on the 365 mail client which needs altering - or I've forgotten something.

I'll try tagging @MisterW and see if he can spot my deliberate mistake, or help us.

@jab1 what you suggested should work fine. If incoming mail is working then the username/ password is correct and the same credentials ought to work for outgoing..

OR maybe not...

ISTR It's possible to use an email address/password  for incoming but it must be accountname & password fir outgoing

Ii's possible that the new ISP is blocking port 25 for SMTP connections.

@WNL try using port 587 with STARTTLS encryption for the outgoing server.

You'll also need outgoing authentication as @jab1 mentioned earlier.
