Re: Plusnet emails refusing to send.

I received an (robot) email from Force9 support a week or so ago advising that "as your mailbox has not been accessed since April we have archived the contents of your mailbox"  This has to be a mistake as I have not stopped using the mailbox daily for more than 20 years. So I phoned up Plusnet support this morning to request that the older emails be unarchived, and spoke to a very helpful young man.

He has raised a ticket to ask for the unarchiving, but I mentioned to him this problem that I am currently experiencing with email clients and plusnet mailboxes, namely I can access webmail OK but outlook and applemail are not functioning. His comment was that this disruption was entirely due to the impending move to Greenby and nothing now would change until the transfer in October (?) was complete. Is this the real cause of our email problems at the moment?

cheers

Take what first-line support say on this with at least half a bag of salt - they are clueless.

Re: Plusnet emails refusing to send.

the person i spoke to asked me where i had found out about the greenby move, i told her on the website, i did as it asked and it said i needed a code from plusnet. she then came back to me and said it wasnt live till november. then i asked about the email thing and was sent here. usually much better support than this time.

@vorlon99

What where in respect of the Greenby migration says you need a code please?

Are you confusing YOU moving your domain name away with the Greenby migration?

On havebeenpwned.com I am shown as 19 breeches, but none shown in MXTOOLBOX.

My problem remains that I can access the force9 mailboxes OK in webmail, so the logon credentials are valid, but using the mailbox settings in Outlook 365 (windows11) and in applemail (ipads)  I seem to be unable to logon to these mail clients to send or receive.

Earlier messages that the address was blacklisted have disappeared but outlook is now questioning/rejecting the plusnet mailbox certificate.

cheers

Been a couple of bust days, so I've not been around to field this in detail.

Which bit of the MXTOOLBOX system did you expect to report data breaches?  TTBOMK that is not something MXTOOLBOX does.

So many cases running around here - do I recall correctly that you are Force9 and that when you run the email server connection diagnostics (see the link below) you encounter a certificate revocation check failure?

If yes, then try configuring the servers WITHOUT encryption.  Whilst this is not ideal, it might help clarify the location of the issue.

You state that you cannot logon to send or receive ... but then mention blacklisted state of your email address ... to know that, you'd need to be logged on!

Re: Plusnet emails refusing to send.

it said so when i tried to use the link to get an account (which you have to make) then it says it does not recognise the account and asks for a number from plusnet

Which bit of the MXTOOLBOX system did you expect to report data breaches?  TTBOMK that is not something MXTOOLBOX does.  - I used the blacklist tool in MXTOOLBOX - the blacklist message has gone away

So many cases running around here - do I recall correctly that you are Force9 and that when you run the email server connection diagnostics (see the link below) you encounter a certificate revocation check failure? - sometimes

If yes, then try configuring the servers WITHOUT encryption.  Whilst this is not ideal, it might help clarify the location of the issue. - done that - no change

You state that you cannot logon to send or receive ... but then mention blacklisted state of your email address ... to know that, you'd need to be logged on!  - I can logon fine via webmail - send and receive - so I know that the logon credentials are correct. But using outlook (paid for version) and apple mail I am unable to get in to the mailbox via the mail client

Screenshot of outlook error message attached.

cheers and thanks for your patience

Re: Plusnet emails refusing to send.

That has hints of server settings - do the diagnostics deliver any more detail?

Re: Plusnet emails refusing to send.

What happens if you use the non-encrypted versions...

curl.exe -v imap://imap.force9.net -u redacted
curl.exe -v pop3://mail.force9.net -u redacted
curl.exe -v smtp://relay.force9.net:587 -u redacted

Note that to run the SMTP test, you need to press enter to execute the last command.  It is on the end of your post, apparently unexecuted.

Re: Plusnet emails refusing to send.

It makes crystal clear that on your platform, using cURL there is an issue processing the encryption security certificates.  What is not so clear are...

  1. Is this the issue being experienced by your email application though reported as a password / login issue
  2. Will the non-encrypted versions of the cURL commands work as expected - see above
  3. If the non-encrypted cURL commands work, will email work without encryption (not ideal but an essential diagnostic step)
  4. Why you are experiencing this issue at all
