Hi Reddog,
Whilst I'm afraid that I don't have access to Rami's email, it would certainly be worth doing a reboot of your router to see if you are able to get a better speed when connected to one of our different gateways in case your speeds are not being caused by VP congestion at BTs end.

Hi
got an email from the VP team confirming that the VP is ok and not running hot. when you do speed tests, do they vary significantly or roughly 1500kbps on average?
is it any better after the reboot?
Can you try to do a speed test from one PC connected by Ethernet if you are using wireless?
Would you be able to test it with another router if you haven't done this so far?
I cant think of anything else to check on our side, but to raise a speed fault if the line performance is still poor
sorry to reiterate but sometimes basic things that we forget to check.

It's still really bad, even after switching the router off for 30 mins.
Reconnected to a new gateway pte-ag1.
My pc is wired.
Last week i turned on the wireless so i can play xbox 360 upstairs.
I thought i had set it up properly.
WPA-PSK Security Encryption, i used a Network Key with about 40 letters.
Speedtest done with xbox off ofcourse.
Now i think maybe this has something to do with it.
I will turn off the wireless later and do some more speed tests.

My next door neighbour brought a netgear router due to the facts that it had great reviews too, but he only got 2900 kbps download speeds and it took ages before his laptop picked up the wireless signal when opening the lid to reconnect unlike my setup.
I get around 6500kbps no crc fec & hec errors for weeks at a time or 1or 2 if connected for a month and my setup has a BT-i plate fitted and BT wired all my extensions and I disconnected the ring wire
He asked me what the problem was so I checked all of his wiring connects filters etc
We both have the same Dell laptops so I knew something was wrong in the end I gave him one of my spare speedtouch 716wl routers to use and fitted a BT-i plate for him and sorted out is phone wiring, now he gets a round 6543kbps download and 375kbps and sync at 8128kbps he get a few more errors than me though.
His laptop reconnects within 10 seconds of opening the lid like mine
Nat bad for a router that cost 99p plus £5.99 p&p

Hi Reddog,
Hmmm, keep the 585 on for a few days and see if the good throughputs are maintained before trying the Netgear again, it is a good possibility that it's broken as you said. Although you've got a fairly short line and good sync, one tip when you swapping things about, powerdown the modem/router and wait several minutes before unplugging cable/filter/master etc from the line, then DLM shouldn't think you have an intermittent line problem.

In the Netgear, on the WAN setup page, is the MTU size 1500? If not give that a try.

Well as you can see the 585 is flyin atm.
The only downside to the Thompson is, while gaming or doing ping/tracerts, it is atleast 5-8 ms slower than the Netgear.
This is a TG585 trace.

I'm pretty sure that difference is more because in swapping over you've gone on to a different gateway.
