My site is running noticeably much slower than normal for visitors from Plusnet - regardless what Gateway they are on & Im starting to get the odd grumble about it.
Other ISPs seem to be OK..
I think it probably may have something to do with this.. ie Im bouncing all round London, over to France and back to the UK again and its been like this for the past few days.
I have my own server (not shared hosting) & my Server stats are fine and the load is excellent with plenty to spare.... but this isnt quite right.. nor is why should it be affecting Plusnet users
Normally I can ping my server in 15/16ms (Im up north). This was from tonight

Which brings me to repeat, why only Plusnet customers..

PN know about it but we are a vocal few, so its never changed unless its that poor that it affects a lot of customers. PN have stop gap changed the routing on occasions, but Level3 never get there hardware to not fail over regularly and what backups they have never trigger.

Possible reasons why its limited to plusnet?
Other isp's may not use level3 to goto the site.
Other isp's may have direct peering.
Other isp's may have kicked level3 up the backside and got fixed routing, but normally if a transit provider did this it would affect all their traffic.
Kitz you have a trace from BT to the site?
It seems your site isp does have LINX peering so the question is why isnt plusnet using it?
Also enable ipv6 😛 then us ipv6 plusnet users will probably go over that instead

Unfortunately the difference could just be due to the routing having changed to go via cogentco.com rather than ntt.net or because the traceroute is being done at a different time of the day. But it seems it could vary between ptn -> ptw-cr01 -> level3 or ptn -> ptw-cr02 -> ptw-cr01 -> pcl-cr01 -> level3.

I think the issue is that for some reason, NTT seem to be announcing that route via Paris to Level3.

It's a routing problem, Plusnet will not do a thing about it. (c.f. long running thread about a certain torrent site being blocked by one of plusnet's peering partners and they inaction and lack of willingness to do anything to change the routing paths)

If you could explain what Plusnet can do about that specific site, then I am all ears.

We had a similar thing with the PN routing to OpenDNS, where the routing changes periodically from London to Frankfurt. At one point, all DNS lookups with OpenDNS from Europe were being sent to the US.
I contacted OpenDNS who said they had to stop Level3 routing to their London datacentre for a short period because there was packet loss on that link, meaning the traffic automatically moved over to Frankfurt. At one point OpenDNS had to take Frankfurt offline, which meant Level3 then routed to the OpenDNS Washington datacentre.

Bit disappointed no response from PN on this, particularly since its been brought to my attention that Im not the only one complaining about the Level3 routing via Paris.
Theres been several another threads on here in which gamers are also affected. My server is located in a London datacenter so theres no reason why this should be happening.
This is from a sky connection

Users on other ISPs arent having this problem, so if they can get it right, whats the big deal for plusnet?
Im not a happy bunny, the site is garbage at times from PN. Theres a reason why I pay for premium UK hosting and a lot of the site users are on Plusnet. I was doing some huge transfers the other day for the wiki (security releases and backups) and it took me all day. It was REALLY doing my head in because things were slow.. yet I can look at the server load and see its only at 0.11 whilst Im still sat there waiting for a page to load.
For the past few nights any SQL backups to my PC have failed due to the amount of time it takes. Not too long ago I could FTP down from my server at full pelt of my line... now its a max of 50Mbps, but more often I cant get that, so theres some congestion somewhere along the line which is much worse in the evenings.
Quote Kitz - If you raise it with your hosts, they should get an answer from their peers.
I have done now.. although not sure what their findings will be if its only affecting PN.
Quote Hopefully PN will then do the same with Level3.
Kelly. / Chris.. any ideas please?
Quote It seems your site isp does have LINX peering so the question is why isnt plusnet using it?
Yes afaik they do or Ive at least in the past seen Linx but that was before I had my own server & at that may have been at a different datacenter - not sure tbh. They also peer with CogentCo.

There could be some issue with the Level3 London > NTT London connection which is why traffic is being sent via Paris.

That tracert you provided is interesting... no problems if via cogentco.
I can trace my hosts via cogentco and have no issues

From the trace above, ptn is passing me over to ptw, with then passes me over to pcl... and from there Level3 sends me over to France.
Its not too bad atm, but come later in the evening, then lag will kick in and thats when things start to slow down.

I am sure there will be a straightforward answer why Level3 are sending traffic to NTT in Paris. It wouldn't make much sense to be doing this without a reason.
