There seems to be devil in the details around FIBRE product provisioning. Though the offer is “as fast as your line can go” and the pervious suggestions that “all lines are provisioned on 80/20” there has been empirical evidence that lines below and near 40mbps have been provisioned on 40/10.

Clearly that practice delivers economic benefits which still deliver the “go as fast as your line can” offer. We have seen users on the margin finding capping in the low 40+mbps range.

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

Are you sure?

So limited VDSL (40/10) is called Unlimited Fibre and unlimited VDSL (80/20) is not. This is worse than I thought! 🤣

Easy enough if they had stuck with the FTTC (Fibre To The Cabinet) and FTTP (Fibre To The Premises)/FTTH (Fibre To The Home) designations, which I still use.

You need to get the right semantics. “Unlimited” does not refer to speed, but data consumption volumes. That is the product is not limited to N GB per month similar to those on mobile services.

Actually, that is what I thought. But you can see how it introduces confusions since there is no apparent describer of the line speed. Which, I would have thought is the thing of main immediate interest to most users. What they anchor on.

Also, if Limited/Unlimited applies to data use, that only introduces more questions. If it is "Limited", how is it limited, quantitatively - I have no idea.

In this context If a produce is “limited” )note none of the Plusnet ones are) then the limit is on the sum of bytes downloaded and uploaded. I believe that’s line bytes, not just data bytes.

... So the Plusnet BB contracts are not limited. Despite that, some are called "Unlimited" and others are not called "Limited" even if they are limited (in speed)?

This is getting weirder and weirder. 🤔

@pvmb  You are just digging yourself into a bigger hole, you invented the name "Limited fibre" which is actually "Unlimited Fibre" i.e. the 40/10 FTTC product. "Unlimited Fibre Extra" is the 80/20 FTTC version.  As has already been stated Unlimited refers to data usage, not speed. All Broadband services are limited to various speeds according to the technology but no ISP is going to name a product Limited something.

I do agree with you that when ISPs called products Fibre when it was only to the cabinet was the start of problem but the Advertising Standards Agency in their wisdom allowed it.

I am coming to the conclusion that you are just having a laugh and trying to wind us up with your posts.😀

@pvmb The 80/20 option is (or was ) known on PN as 'Unlimited Fibre Extra' - - other providers use different terminology.

Hi John, I've got the newest Plusnet router/hub. They swapped it out last year 'cause I kept losing connection.

With regard to:

  • Unlimited Fibre: 40 Mbps download speed, 10 Mbps upload speed
  • Unlimited Fibre Extra: 80 Mbps download speed, 20 Mbps upload speed
  • Fibre: The fastest available speed for your specific line

For the time being, it's possible to re-contract for the same product and retain your landline service. However, any product change will necessitate a switch to SOGEA (FTTC without a phone line).

  1. What do the ratios 40/10 and 80/20 mean please? Does these numbers represent the download and upload speeds, respectively ie 40/10 means a maximum download speed of 40 Mbps and a maximum upload speed of 10 Mbps? thanks.

  2. What are the implications of switching to SOGEA (FTTC without a phone line)? Does this mean Ill be receiving the same broadband service (Unlimited Fibre) without a dedicated phone line. Im just double-checking I have this right. Or are there any other limitations.
