Server down, DNS error

Our FTTP was down for half an hour last night, the first break in service for almost eight years. Message was DNS SERVER ERROR. Returned to normal by itself after I tried router reset etc. I've seen posts stating this is a frequent PN problem, would be interested to know what it means and what I can do about it should it recur.
