Routers...

Are there any other better ones someone can recommend rather than the terrible Thomson thing I got from Plusnet.
It has the worst configuration screens i've ever used and the wireless signal isn't exactly fantastic either.
Also while i'm on here i have to say that i feel i've been sold down the river by PN. I had exactly the same offer letter as some on here promising speeds of 11mbps with expected speeds of between 6.5 and 15mbps. On every speed test i've done so far i rarely see above 6mbps and have seen as low as 2mbps. On speaking to CS i was promised they would re-profile the line and get the speeds up but nothing as yet. I've had another router sent out which behaved worse than the first one, and if you're streaming video or torrents forget it. I Thought Sky was bad but at least that had a constant speed even if it did drop out on occasion. I have just done a quick series of tests and not one came out at above 4mbps, this is while I'm currently paying for the pro service as well.
The chap on the end of the phone when i was enquiring about PN promised me that they didn't cap the lines only to find out that they do in the form of "traffic management" and you have to ask for the upload speeds to be unlocked. This is still after paying for the Pro service, I still can't see what advantage that gains me over normal service.
I've asked for my line to have a gaming profile only to be told that they don't know what that means.
I agree with some on here as well with regards to PS3 connections being shoddy at best, even after you've spent half your evening port forwarding it still doesn't get much better. Everything i have in the house is set up optimally, the plugs are in the master test socket, there are no extensions, I've tried several filters and unplugging different things to see if that makes much difference, it didn't. Also i don't like to mess with it too much as if you unplug the thing and re-connect the bloody router tends to lose its settings and re-configures itself meaning you have to do any settings you had again.
The question that no-one at PN can seem to answer is why do you promise the earth when it's so blatantly obvious you can't deliver it? I researched my exchange and found that lo and behold the speed i should achieve is between 5 and 7 mbps so why promise 11? Also it would be nice to get towards 7mbps as at least it would be on a par with Sky.
In all honesty unless someone at PN comes back and speaks sense then I'm afraid I'll be moving ISP again.
The only technical advice they could give as well was to post questions here or have a BT engineer out. I've had 2 of them out this year at Skys request and as far as BT are concerned the line is as good as it gets. To rely on getting answers back on a forum is horrendous, especially if you have intermittent problems.
It all seems a bit slapdash to me.
Good Honest Broadband? Yet to see it I'm afraid.

Re: Routers...

My test results through Speedtest.
I stick to the one test as then you get consistent results. As you can see the results are up and down, there is the occasional decent result but the rest are way below par. The one constant is the good upload speed but the bad download doesn't balance it out.

Re: Routers...

first you need to do BT speedtest http://speedtester.bt.com/ then you should be able to see what the profile is for your line , and PN can check it.
if you are a new customer you need to wait 10 days for  line to settle down .
and yes i dont like the thompson router, i use a old home hub 2 its a lot better for my PC gaming
Asus ROG Hero Vii Z97 , Intel i5 4690k ,ROG Asus Strix 1070,
samsung 850evo 250gig , WD black 2 TB . Asus Phoebus sound ,
16 gig Avexir ram 2400 , water cooling Corsair H100i gtx ,
Corsair 750HXI Psu , Phanteks Enthoo pro case .

Re: Routers...

Done that and got sporadic results again.
I also got told that PN don't monitor lines for any length of time to gather info.
I'm starting to think they don't really do anything as such.
Amazingly enough though after posting on here last night my speeds have reached an all time high.   Roll_eyes

No, it's not the speed test result that is of interest so much as the "IP Profile" quoted with the results.  What was your IP Profile?

The certainly monitor all connections and disconnections.  A pictorial representation of this is sometimes given on this forum.

Re: Routers...

They don't actively monitor lines but they do log all connections/disconnections from their servers

Re: Routers...

As requested:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 2663 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 2000-7150 Kbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 7219 Kbps

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.
If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.
Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.
Note: An Upstream test was not conducted on this line due to a technical issue. If your concern is related to upstream performance then please retry
the performance test again in 1 hours time.

HI nighttrain1974,
Looking at it now I think it might be ok. Can you see how it is at your end now?
