Re: Confused about Fibre installation....

Well today is the day that I'm due for a "visit".....
Fingers crossed that the engineer turns up and weaves his magic.

Re: Confused about Fibre installation....

Hi vimesuk,
I'm guessing that the install went well as you've had an active connection for 3 hours?
Let me know if there's anything you need or how it went.

Re: Confused about Fibre installation....

Thanks for that Smiley
Yes it seemed to go fine. Our phone and broadband service went off at 8:30am whilst the engineer did his bit at the exchange, after 30mins or so we had the phone line back. Then he called at our house and did his bit on the faceplate of the NTE5 which then established the FFTC connection.
All seems well at the moment and hopefully over the next ten days or so I will get an idea of the stability etc of the connection. Early indications are good and I seem to be able to download at around 7.8 mb/s. Although I'm not sure as to what my connection stats are as I can't seem to find them within the routers home page..?

Re: Confused about Fibre installation....

@vimesuk
That sounds rather slow for a FTTC connection! Are you testing via wifi? If so, you could try connecting up with an ethernet cable and see if that gives better results.
You won't be able to get the traditional "modem stats" with FTTC since the BTOR modem is separate and locked down (unless you opt to buy an unlocked VDSL modem from eBay, but that's another topic). The best you can do is monitor your throughput and keep an eye on your BT IP Profile, which gives an indication of the speed the line is sync-ed at. To get that, go to the BTW Speed Tester, run the first test then press the Further Diagnostics button. That runs a 2nd test then tells you the IP profile. If you copy/paste that result back here, someone will be able to give you further advice about how the line is performing.

Re: Confused about Fibre installation....

Also check your Current Line speed (Login required) and make sure it matches the BT IP Profile.

Re: Confused about Fibre installation....

His speed seems fine 7.8mbs is megabytes not megabits (Mbs)!

Re: Confused about Fibre installation....

Everything is fine with your profile from our-side. I've checked your line and you should be seeing speeds around  70Mb/s. Can you try a speedtest, if there's no improvement then please try a PPPoE connection.

Re: Confused about Fibre installation....

Sorry for the confusion, I did mean Megabytes per second and I should have written MB/sec.

I am able to download at 7.83 megabytes per second, so it seems fine...?

Except as the OP has now correctly admitted it should have been 7.8MB/s  Wink
However that last speed test was a bit slow at 46Mb/s, it should have been nearer 62+Mb/s, but that could be a one off & was it WiFi rather than Ethernet?

Re: Confused about Fibre installation....

My connection is made by CAT5E to the router and not over Wi-Fi.
If I download a large file from Usenet I am getting a consistent throughput of 7.83 MB/sec.
Downloading Direct X SDK direct from Microsoft (usually pretty good at giving a constant speed) I get 7.8 MB/sec.
The speedtest above though gives what I had shown.
Not sure why there is a difference...?
Running it again....

Re: Confused about Fibre installation....

It could be that the BT Speedtester is congested at the moment - or borked again  Roll_eyes and don't pay too much attention to the ping time it gives!
Try Speedtest.net and mybroadbandspeed.co.uk and see what they give.
Edit: But it might be the Gateway you are on  Shocked

Re: Confused about Fibre installation....

Good point Smiley
At this stage, considering my connection has only been up for a few hours, I'm kinda happy with what I'm seeing from Usenet and what I pulled from Microsoft - I have typically found in the past for many of the speed tests to be less than accurate with their routing or congestion issues.
Maybe they should just replace the hamster on the wheel.?

Re: Confused about Fibre installation....

See what it's like this evening. If it get's really bad check which Gateway you are on then do a Gateway hop - log in to the Router, go to the Internet Box and click Disconnect, wait about 30 secs and then click Connect.
Check you are on a new Gateway and repeat the speedtests.

Re: Confused about Fibre installation....

Thanks for that....
Which gateway
You are currently connected to gateway ptn-ag04.
This is located in Telehouse North
I will give it a go later tonight, I will let the hamster take a breather
