Cannot connect to internet.

Hi,
I am new to broadband and used it for the first time yesterday and after connecting I did a couple of speed tests and the Bt test and everything was fine and as expected.
Then after 10 minutes I made the mistake of switching off the pc, not the router, for a couple of hours. When I switched back on I couldn't get the pc to connect to the router by wireless or cable, so I returned the router to factory settings and then inputed all the details and rebooted.
That fixed it and I can ping the router by wireless and cable, but I cannot get on the internet.
The router Dlink G624T shows green lights on power/ adsl/ wlan/ status flashes (correct) Router wire connected to filter and test socket. Telephone working. Run the inital status check on the website (using different connection) for my phone number/account, all green ticks.
The router is s/hand but it did work yesterday and the adsl light is green. Still in the 10 day training period.
Any ideas for me to try, I wonder if the wrong username or similar would cause this.

Re: Cannot connect to internet.

Connect your PC to your router via a wire.  It's easier if we can eliminate wireless networking issues.  You didn't say what OS you are using.  I assume it is XP?  If so, start a command window and run the command:

ipconfig /all

and paste the results here.

Re: Cannot connect to internet.

Thanks. It is Xp sp2
I have had a look further on the check website past the initial checks section, and have used the Plusnet test login details and with these have been able to connect to their test webpage.
I have reported this and further checks are now being made..

Re: Cannot connect to internet.

Which test username were you able to connect with? Was it the bt_test_user@plusdsl.net as if so you shouldn't have any issues connecting on your normal username.
If you like I'll try dialtesting from here as that will help narrow where the fault lies.

Re: Cannot connect to internet.

Hi Chris,
I regret the previous info was incorrect, I didn't realize I had mobile broadband running in the background, that why the page connected.
I have rerun the tests and cannot connect to the pages using    bt_test_user@plusdsl.net and bt_test@startup_domain, the test have completed with this result.
"Test result summary: Inconclusive
We have not been able to complete the checks of your broadband service.
This may be the result of a fault in the testing system rather than your service."
Can you please look into this further, could it be a router failure (adsl light green)
Can you send me a password reminder
thank you  (fire ****)

Re: Cannot connect to internet.

Can we do a few checks
From the web interface http://192.168.1.1 or  http://192.168.0.1
> "Status" Tab at the top
> "DSL Status" from the left Menu
Default username login "admin" password "admin".
Can you see if the router is connected to the internet - if it is you should see upstream and downstream speeds as well as attenuation and noise margin.
This is not the same as connecting to Plusnet but only to the exchange

Re: Cannot connect to internet.

Ok I have found them.

                D                          U
Snr          9                          17
Att'tion    49                        30
DataRt    4224                    448
These may have been generated previously when I did get online wednesday, as per my first post.
Using the cable rather than wireless I have pinged the bbc and 208.67.220.220 with the results show no loss for the first hop (my router) and the last, but those in between "no responce from host"
I don't know whether I can rule out a router fault, as I have no idea of its history.

Re: Cannot connect to internet.

Can you try a tracert to 212.159.13.50 and post the results - that is the IP address of one of the Plusnet DNS servers
It should show something like this
C:\Users\James>tracert 212.159.13.50
Tracing route to pth-cdns02.plus.net [212.159.13.50]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
  1    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  192.168.0.1
  2    39 ms    39 ms    38 ms  lo0.plusnet.thn-ag1.plus.net [195.166.128.101]
  3    38 ms    37 ms    39 ms  vl703.thn-gw1.plus.net [84.92.4.241]
  4    40 ms    38 ms    43 ms  ae0-102.ptn-gw01.plus.net [212.159.1.53]
  5    40 ms    39 ms    38 ms  vl55.ptn-lb01.plus.net [212.159.2.124]
  6    38 ms    40 ms    41 ms  pth-cdns02.plus.net [212.159.13.50]
Trace complete.

Re: Cannot connect to internet.

I am baffled - it is getting there eventually with about the right number of hops but very very slowly

Re: Cannot connect to internet.

That is quite bizarre.
Mind PMing me your username?  I don't seem to be able to locate your account.

Re: Cannot connect to internet.

I have turned off Zonealarm and Avira as requested, but the results are as before.
I notice if I ping 212.159.13.50 directly it goes straight to it as normal with these times.

Re: Cannot connect to internet.

There is no responce when trying to connect to that page.
If I ping that address, no responce from host
