I'll say first of all I'm aware of the recent problems Plus Net have been having. That said if you look at my speed history you'll see that occasionally I do have an adequate speed for my needs but most of the time it's absolutely appalling (thus suggesting to a layman like me that the problem is not at my end as the problem isn't constant). This problem started about 2 months ago and I've been on at support for the last 6 weeks trying to get some sort of answer from them (even if it's just to say "it's to do with the problems we're having"). But I keep getting fobbed off with automated answers. After being a customer for 9 years without having any significant problem until now I'm finding the whole scenario disappointing and annoying. I've read that a lot of users on here are getting reasonable speeds albeit not ones that they'd expect so if I could at least do something to reach their hallowed ground I'd be relatively satisfied. I shouldn't be having to ask you though should I...?
So, here's the relevant stats, most of which are gibberish to me. Thanks in advance for any help even if it is just to confirm it's to do with PN's problems...

I've checked your account and you're on the right traffic management profile and I don't see any suspicious upload activity or anything like that. Checking your RADIUS logs though, your line does seem to be up and down quite a lot. Does this look right to you?

Thank you for your reply. It probably is, it was much worse about 6 weeks ago as it was going off all the time and was something I mentioned in my original ticket. Since then though it's improved. It's no big problem to me practically speaking (other than if it's connected with the speed issue obviously), I just assumed that it was a normal occasional occurrence - like I said, I'm a layman..

You need to find out why the noise margin is dropping.
Have you got multiple phone extensions? If so is everything plugged in to any extension filtered?

It'd be easier I think to just draw a diagram of how things are set up here. Probably laughably complex but I couldn't figure out how else to do it & it all worked fine for a few months. See attached pic
Cheers

Can you confirm which is the master socket (downstairs I presume)?

You could of course ignore my advice, get Plusnet to arrange for an engineers visit and pay £144 + VAT for the privilege of him telling you it needs to be filtered.

Now my speed is <a href="http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk"><img src="http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/results/06233245.png" /></a>
Not great but a significant increase on earlier this evening, noise margin is still 0db

What you should see is that you have connected with a sensible noise margin - have a look at this immediately the connection is established - that will be your target set by BT. It starts at 6 and goes up increments of 3 if there are problems on the line; every time it increases your sync speed goes down. You should also see that the WAN up time in the router stats shows that you have stopped getting disconnections. Leave your router permanently on with perhaps one power off for a few minutes once a day during daylight hours.
What you should then see over a period of time is the Current Line Speed come back closer to your sync speed (this could take a few days), and, if BT have raised your target noise margin, the noise margin drop back to 6 (this can take a few weeks) with a consequent further increase in speed.

and noise margin, now fluctuating between 6 & 10. It will all change for the worse later on past experience. Thanks Jelv, I'll do as you say but is this speed/noise variation to be expected?

As you are using a Netgear, could you download RouterStats and keep that running. It will give you a graph showing what the noise margin is doing.
