Problems with Virtual Machine Mint 16 (title changed) !

Right your last pic is of the config. You don't need to mod that unless you want something to only appear on the VM.
Look at my screenshot. When the VM is running, click on devices (with the stick plugged in) and it should appear in devices/usb
1st is me attaching the usb stick
2nd is the explorer window showing the contents.
There is also a really good help built in.

@Shutter ........ as HB has said you need to install Guest Additions
1) Start XP
2) when xp is running click on Devices at the top, bottom of the list should be install Guest Additions......... click on this which should start an installer in XP
3) Follow the installer instructions and reboot
4) Follow what I said previously about right-clicking the usb icon, highlight the usb device you want connected and left-click on it

BTW to take a screenshot you don't need to use a camera. Type screen into the search on the Menu. Screenshot should appear, then you can choose active window & delay. That's how I took my screenshots.

OK... pics show opening desktop... then plugging in the usb..... then a shot with the usb in shot .... but not showing on the tabs....
Camera pics are ok for me at the moment !..

One more thing to try.
Open a terminal and enter
sudo service vboxdrv restart and see if that helps.
Or just reboot the pc.

re started vm and still no usb connected...

@ Shutter  I know HB has mentioned this but are you sure your username is added to the vboxusers group.

Not sure if this means the group exists or you have added your username
Try the following in Linux Mint terminal
sudo adduser yourusername vboxusers
Replace yourusername with your own, then log out or reboot
Once back in linux mint desktop, restart virtualbox and your xp

@ gtowen..... You`ve cracked it ! ..    Thanks very much..... 
usb now appears on the Device listing.... and also on the right click down below....

The quote above was only a " guess work" thing I did... and I was talking about adding vboxusers and seeing it on the "groups" tab...
Don`t recall any instructions about actually adding my username...( have looked back and can`t see any... might have missed it tho ! )..
Anyway.. next problem is to get the  Serial port functioning...
What happens here is I have a USB/Serial adapter, and it is showing on the Devices > USB listing ... however on the Serial Port, it shows "disconnected", and if I try any of the alternatives it shows "invalid settings detected"...  and the OK is greyed out when that shows, so I can`t "create pipe" or allow the machine to do it automatically.
Any ideas ?

@ Shutter glad the usb is now working ......... as to the serial port, that is a function I've never used so I can't advise there sorry

ok... Basically, it gives a 9 pin D9 Connector at the end of a USB lead.... I use this for my CWCOM morse key connection.... 
( I think there might be some electronics in the D9 shroud, but not sure)..
it uses a PL2303 driver. and I am using it on WIndows and also got it working on MINT ... so it shouldn`t be too difficult to get working... 
( well, that`s what I thought about the USB/memory stick ! ! ! ! !).
