Re: VirginMedia a JOKE!

this is the traffic mangment policy of VM's national broadband product AKA adsl
i cant belive they sell a unlimited package and then resverve the right to limit you to 512kbps and 80kbps. small % of customers. yeah right
Quote
What is traffic management and what is the National Broadband traffic management policy?
We reserve the right to implement a traffic management policy to help ensure a small number of heavy users do not affect the service for everybody else. A small minority of customers actually download enough information to significantly affect the service for other customers' broadband service. To put it another way, just 5% of customers could account for around 70% of data downloaded at peak times. This obviously would impact everybody's service so we reserve the right to traffic manage specific customers download speeds during peak periods to improve the service for everyone else.
Each day we monitor how much data our customers download during the peak times of the day. We measure this on a Kilobytes (KB) downloaded per hour basis. This allows us to identify the small number of customers who are trying to download excessive amounts of data over a small period of time and the even smaller number of people who are downloading vast amounts of data constantly during peak times. Both types of behaviour can be at the detriment of service to the vast majority of the Virgin Media customers. We reserve the right to traffic manage these customers during peak times using one of the following policies depending on the behaviour of the customers in question.
To ensure that all customers receive the appropriate level of service at peak times we will limit customers who have downloaded an excessive amount of data during a one hour period of the peak time frame. These customers will be limited on a one off basis to 512Kbit/s for the remainder of the peak period for that day. The peak period is from 4pm to midnight during the week and 10am till midnight at the weekend.
For the small number of customers who constantly download excessive amounts of data (around 2% of our customers), our traffic management solution will temporarily set download speeds to no lower than 80Kbit/s. This limit is applied daily, 4pm until midnight, for one week. In the same week during off-peak periods our traffic management solution will automatically reset download speeds back to their full speed and no traffic management will be applied.
Each week we review our heaviest peak-time users over the previous 7 days. We then update the refreshed customer list to our servers for traffic shaping. This should mean a customer does not have their traffic managed for two consecutive weeks.
Even for the small number of customers whose service is traffic-managed there is a limited impact. At 80Kbit/s a customer has full use of their browsing and email capability, and can still download around 8 music tracks in an hour.

least PN bbyw products you know your usage limit and know the speed cap  is going to be in place.
VM's is bit sneaky as they can limit any one they like, and have the round dangley things to call it unlimited
@grudkin. there is traffic mangment here at PN but it's on a traffic type policy and not a whole line thottle like VM check here
http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/quality_broadband/speed.shtml
if your a gamer dont worry about the 2mb cap as gaming runs fine on unlimited as i switched from one of the old products

Believe me that is just not true, I am not a heavy downloader and I get hit every night by virgin traffic management.
Browsing DOES get hit and emails take ages to download too.
I read about PN shaping last week before I signed up!
Plus I will be saving a few quid with PN on the value brodband package 10GB per month! (would i have signed for that if I was a heavy downloader!!)  hek even taking the unlimited package with anytime+ you still save £1 because you pay less for line rental..

Re: VirginMedia a JOKE!

dont worry your web browsing and time critical traffic ect dont get messed with here in fact there given the red carpet treatment
iam on a 3mb ip profile damp length of string and get 2.7-2.8mb throughput 24/7 on tests
as you live nxt door to exchange and get 8mb sync i think you will see a slight decrease in throughput at peak times but iam willing to put £10 on the table that you never get network congestion slowing your throuput on speed test down to 0.12 and might even go as far as 3.15mb esp after midnight

Re: VirginMedia a JOKE!

I dont quite live next door to the exchange 1.2 miles line length I think but shorter as the crow flys.
However I do have 8128 sync and the profile has always been 7150 with a netgear router (DG834GSP v3 and DG834GT) but was slightly lower with the virgin supplied Thomson speedtouch 330 usb modem!
This brings me to my question
How does the 585v7 compare to the above netgears?

Re: VirginMedia a JOKE!

not to sure as i run a net dg834g v4 as the broadcom chips seem to like long lines.
plusnet have only recently bein offering the speedtouch's so i didnt get one when signed up a couple of years ago.
all i know about the speedtouch's bein given out by PN is they have some sort of firmware that in the future will make it easy for staff to run tests on.
i am sure some one with one will be long soon to give you a review of it.
a atten of 23db to me means your renting a room at your exchange. yes some jealousy coming from the end of my long line
p.s you might want to remove the first two lines from the quote as a grummpy wizard or a ps3 freak will be a long to tell you off for quoting a full proceding post

Re: VirginMedia a JOKE!

Does that look better NOW?
Just out of intrest what results do you get from http://www.numion.com
I just got this result!
kilobit/sec (kilobyte/sec)
Download speed: 2,245.11 (280.63)
Upload speed: 339.86 (42.48)
Surfspeed inside United Kingdom: 287.37 (35.92)
Surfspeed average (worldwide): 124.29 (15.53)
Surfspeed outside United Kingdom: 104.30 (13.03)
Latency: 718 milliseconds

note the latency Grin

Re: VirginMedia a JOKE!

dosent look a very acrute test site to me to be honest
Download speed: 2,312.35 (289.04) 92%
Upload speed: 715.74 (89.46) 99%
Surfspeed inside United Kingdom: 659.01 (82.37) 100%
Surfspeed average (worldwide): 279.31 (34.91) 100%
Surfspeed outside United Kingdom: 254.81 (31.85) 100%
Latency: 70 milliseconds
another not so gd test site is speedtest.net but in my opion alot better than that test site

for checking latency on your line a gd old cmd prompt ping to bbc.co.uk does the trick
Pinging bbc.co.uk [212.58.224.138] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 212.58.224.138: bytes=32 time=18ms TTL=120
Reply from 212.58.224.138: bytes=32 time=17ms TTL=120
Reply from 212.58.224.138: bytes=32 time=17ms TTL=120
Reply from 212.58.224.138: bytes=32 time=18ms TTL=120
Ping statistics for 212.58.224.138:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 17ms, Maximum = 18ms, Average = 17ms
note iam on fast path so when your PN line is up and runing i would think you will get 20-30ms extra untill / if you decide to turn interleaving off

Re: VirginMedia a JOKE!

LOL Just look at the difference in the surfspeed tests!

kilobit/sec (kilobyte/sec)
VM Surfspeed inside United Kingdom: 287.37 (35.92)
PN Surfspeed inside United Kingdom: 659.01 (82.37)
VM Surfspeed average (worldwide): 124.29 (15.53)
PN Surfspeed average (worldwide): 279.31 (34.91)
VM Surfspeed outside United Kingdom: 104.30 (13.03)
PN Surfspeed outside United Kingdom: 254.81 (31.85)

VM Latency: 718 milliseconds  Roll_eyes
PN Latency: 70 milliseconds
Even using cmd prompt ping to bbc.co.uk can be very bad with VM, in the past I have had results of more than 350ms using that method.
