640kb/s or 640kB/s if it's the latter than this is at the maximum speed for a 5500 profile.

Will it get to 6000 or 6500 then ?
I put a new NTE5 box on it and a new ADSL filter faceplate as above. So on my side everything is new. Now BT has to do their part.

640kBs = 5120kbs which is the download speed you expect with a 5500kbs profile.

Quote from: itsme You did not answer the question whether it was 640kbs or 640kBs.
640kBs = 5120kbs which is the download speed you expect with a 5500kbs profile.
It did not say in the program that was used to download, whether it was kilobits per second or kilobytes per second. It just said kbs in downloading on Opensuse.org the 64bit version of Suse Linux 11.2
But go ahead, what do you think it is then ?
I think it is kilobytes, but maybe you think is kilobits.
Like as in:
Kilobytes per second = KB/s
Kilobits per second = kbps
Your browser reports speeds in KB/s, the speed tests report speeds in kbps.
1 kbps = 1000 bps
1 KB/s = 1024 B/s
1 KB/s = 8.192 kbps
1 kbps = .1221 KB/s
KB/s to kbps
Take KB/s and multiply by 8.192
Example
100KB/s = 819.2kbps
kbps to KB/s
Take kbps and divide by 8.192 (or multiply by .1221)
Example
1000kbps = 122KB/s

Download speeds have gone down too. From 640 kb/s to 349 kb/s, same download FTP servers from yesterday, so I am back to former throughput ADSL Max speeds as I had before. ?????
Good ping and hardly any jitter and a A grade.
My remark is, I have done my part to make my wiring to perfection in the house to the highest standards that are available.

Quote about the ADSL/Broadband Filter Plug in Faceplate:
Your router or modem can now be plugged directly into the Master socket which offers a better connection ( I don't see it, compared to yesterdays setup) as it is NO longer reliant on plug in filters, cheap dongles, or unreliable extension wiring, which are often the cause of poor performance. Embedded technology which helps to optimize the line speed on the ADSL broadband. Ideal for Hi-Speed Video streaming and download TV.
Designed to exceed the the BT SIN 346 v2.2 guidelines for UK microfilters.
and 75 cm wire to the socket from the modem. Original cable delivered with Modem Router. I can't get any closer then that to the socket. I also tried a special thicker cable, but to no avail. Same results.
Modem shows now correct down and up values. Before it showed very high up values of over 22000. Now this is 1363 what is normal for ADSL2+. It is showing that it is training for ITU G.994.1: Handshake Procedures for Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) Transceivers
G.994.1 defines signals, messages and procedures for exchanging these between Digital Subscriber
Line (DSL) equipment, when the modes of operation of the equipment need to be automatically
established and selected, but before signals are exchanged which are specific to a particular DSL
Recommendation.
The principal characteristics of G.994.1 are as follows:
a) use over metallic local loops;
b) provisions to exchange capabilities information between DSL equipment for identifying
common modes of operation;
c) provisions for DSL equipment at either end of the loop to select a common mode of
operation or to request the other end to select the mode;
d) provisions for exchanging non-standard information between DSL equipment;
e) provisions to exchange and request service and application related information;
f) support for both duplex and half-duplex transmission modes.

Watch this:
and
And it is the same as with the new set.
Also the speed is from 640 kb/s to 349 kb/s again. On the same FTP servers. I wonder what excuse they have now again for me dropping 291 kb/s ?
Conclusion: It's definitely NOT me ! It was too good to be true. It's official.
That's what I meant now with this post and with the other post here: http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,84001.0.html

With all due respect, the speedtest results that you post are not the most useful measure to compare the different setups with your NTE5a, filtered faceplate, etc. It would be much more useful to give the sync rates, SNR and attenuation figures direct from your router. The speedtest results can vary significantly depending on the time of day and what your computer might be doing at the time. The good news is that if making the changes to the setup doesn't make a lot of difference then that confirms that all filters and any internal telephone wiring is sound. The advantage of the filtered faceplate is that effectively you are permanently plugged directly into the test socket of your master socket (provided your faceplate is not faulty).
Your earlier stats show that you have a downstream target noise margin of 9dB. This is set by the exchange, and may change in increments of +/- 3dB. If your connection is stable for a period of at least 28 days you may find that the target reduces to 6dB, which will give you around ~800kbps increase in sync rate.
When you say you have changed the NTE5a, do you mean the master socket itself? This shouldn't be touched by you, it is BT's responsibility.

I know that, but I wanted to change it anyways because it was very old, looked yellowish instead of white. I did that under supervision of a BT engineer who I know who is my friend. I did not want to go to a 6 year whining to BT to change my socket on my window bay on the customer services no. 150. You can see that here: http://www.btcomplaint.com/ and http://www.btcomplaint.com/2009/09/complaint-to-bt-ceo-ian-livingston.html
Faceplate is fine, as I said if you paid attention I used also my old setup also and even the combination of the both of them. Neither gave any difference, except my download through put has degraded to almost half what it was 2 days ago. I have at least 10 micro filters here to test out and some of them are original Speedtouch microfilters others are even ADSL2+ certified. They can't all be broke is it ? Only one gave a lower throughput and sync rate. I am doing this for days now, even nights. I am tired, grumpy, annoyed and also really angry by now that all my finetuning has not improved anything. And I am NOT going to move closer to the exchange.
From the whole night last night it was 349 kb/s until right now. I was kind of happy that it had increased to the 612-640 kb/s level. Because it makes at least 1 hour difference with downloading large files. Also there is a lag with websurfing. When you click on a link it thinks for a while and then loads it, but it is almost all there the content when that happens. Perhaps it is caching the websites first and then displaying them. Also I have upgraded to Comodo Internet Security 4.0.135239.742 Which is the newest Firewall from them with a Sandbox in it. It works a little bit like Sandboxie. It encapsulates a file that they think is not approved against their database and it waits until you approve it as a safe file after you examine it. They used to do that before, but with Windows 7 this did not work. So I guess they did it like that.

KJ,
Fair enough, I understand that you have changed enough microfilters, faceplates and master sockets to demonstrate that it is extremely unlikely that you have a fault with your setup. From your description your problem is more to do with your throughput speed rather than your sync rate, since you say that this varies between around 600+kB/s to around 350kB/s (kilobytes, not kilobits). Is your sync rate fairly consistent at around 6600kb/s, do you reboot or power off your router regularly. As I said before, if you leave your router on and remain in sync for over 28 days you might see an improvement in sync speed. It might help if you could monitor your connection, looking at the variation in SNR, and if you get frequent disconnections, at what time of the day they occur.
There could be two causes for the evening slowdown, the most likely being contention at the exchange. I think I read from some of your previous posts that you live in a built up area, possibly where the take-up of broadband is greater for your local exchange. The only possible cause is throttling, which Plusnet do to certain types of high bandwidth intensive internet traffic in order to make general access faster.
Do you know if your exchange is ADSL2+ enabled, if so has Plusnet changed you over to 21CN?

Following procedures done.
1. Reset modem to Factory settings, Reflashed the Firmware, reset the values to connect Plusnet.
2 Switch hub reset.
3. Reset Computer, BIOS Reset to factory settings, Reflashed the Firmware, reset the values for booting procedure BIOS and getting ready for OS install.
4. Computer partitions wiped, MBR cleared and scanned for virusses, Updated MBR, Created new Partition, Updated MBR. Scanned for any trouble in MBR, FAT1 and FAT2 and Partition and files.
5. Reinstall OS from clean source, Drivers installed from clean source, Programs installed from clean source. Reboot into Safe mode with Networking. Reset the modem. Uploaded settings. Reboot.
6. Log on, check connection, clear and connected.
7. DNS cache cleared, IPconfig /ALL, IPconfig /FlushDNS, IPConfig /Register Netstat inspections. Netstat -a, -b, -e, -f, -n -o -r -s -t interval time
8. Tracert Plusnet
9. Ping Plusnet, DNS servers and Gateway, Computer, Hostname, Modem, etc etc.
ADSL
Status UP ADSL2+
Downstream Upstream
Data rate(Kbps)
6813 447
6. Scan for malware, viruses, trojans and RATS remote access trojans. Result, With Avast, Comodo, Spyware Terminator, Ad Aware, Spy Search and Destroy, None.
7. Connect to Opensuse.org, tried different download FTP's for downloading. Result, same speed, same thing as before without making every exclusion to prevent accusations of not having my stuff right.
8. Surfed a bit.
9. Logged in to Plusnet forum, made report about findings.
Conclusion: No error on my side, clean system, clean connection. ISP Plusnet not delivering what has been promised in service policy found here, http://www.plus.net/support/service/policies/product_change_policy.shtml using carrier BT as Provider on POTS exchange Southall found here:
http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/LWSOU
Plusnet still wants me to believe it is my problem and the situation of NOT living close enough to the exchange and having no influence on Loop loss from the exchange and not ideal SNR issues. Even though all measures have been taken care of my home side that I have applied to make a connection as best as possible, including above posts and findings over almost 4 weeks. Which is equivalent of 28 days of trying to have ultimate speed downloads and internet experience in the package ADSL 2+ Premium with 80 Gb download cap.
Have been shunned now by technical service people.
