Hi all I'm trying set up a hardwired bridge - if thats what its called - with an old router , trouble is I'm not very techy.  Sad
I need to find out the ip address and DHCP range ?

Re: Hardwired Bridge

You should (probably) disable DHCP.
You might prefer to buy a cheap bridge, which needs no configuration - if it's a wired only version.
Provided there is a router running DHCP, bridges are transparent to it.
(I paid £8 for mine, from Amazon)

Re: Hardwired Bridge

How do I disable DHCP , I cant see it or know what it is.
If I buy a bridge to run from my router whatam I looking for.
I'm SERIOUSLY untechy so I wouldn't even know what to buy.
Cheers

Re: Hardwired Bridge

Probably best if you explain what you are trying to achieve and what model the old router is.

Re: Hardwired Bridge

In a nutshell and in laymans terms:
I would like to plug a long lead into my main router , run this into another part of the house and stick an ariel on the end of it to use a laptop/internet radio there wirelessly.

Re: Hardwired Bridge

As Jelv says,  what make & model is the old router you plan to use for this ?

Re: Hardwired Bridge

As the others have said, you need to say the makes/models of the devices you are using.
this might help you get your head around matters http://www.unix.ms/netgear/

Re: Hardwired Bridge

TG585 V5 Thompson.
I have now managed to find the DHCP bit so will now have a play with it.
Would there be a problem in having the same SSID on the 2nd TG585 ?

Re: Hardwired Bridge

Possibly.  I would try using a different SSID in the first instance.

Re: Hardwired Bridge

I use the same SSID on both of mine but select different channels - been working fine for the last 2 years.

You will also need to change its ( the old router ) IP address since by default it will have the same one as the main router. Assuming the main router is at the default of 192.168.1.254 then set the old router to 192.168.1.63 i.e below the DHCP range of the main router ( assumed to be 192.168.1.64 to 192.168.1.252 ). The IP address setting should be on the same page as the DHCP settings.

Re: Hardwired Bridge

Is that the 'Static' IP I have to change?
So let me have a go at the method.
1. Change 2nd router static IP  ,  disable DHCP ,  optional SSID change ,  Apply settings.
2.  Connect 2nd router to main router using ethernet cable  LAN to LAN.
3.  Surf on 2nd router

Yes, its the one that currently is set to 192.168.1.254/24 Type Static ( assuming its similar to my TG582n ).
Best to do 1 in this order
Change SSID if required, Disable DHCP , Change Static IP
Since as soon as you change the IP you will lose communication with it.
You will need to use the new IP address to reconnect to its web gui if required.

Re: Hardwired Bridge

R lay loo yah!
Thanx MrW,
                      Works a treat.
For some reason - and it doesn't stop it from working - the 2nd router doesn't show up on the 1st router ports - because its an xtension of itself?
But who cares , it works , now off to look for an internet radio.
Cheers
