Re: Download speed up during 'open questions', down again when closed

It now seems that I'm on software version 10.2.2.B and tonight my router event log goes back no farther than 13:21 hours, so that must be when it all happened.
Once again, thanks for all the advice and help  Wink

Re: Download speed up during 'open questions', down again when closed

Sorry once again for the delay in responding. There has been stuff beyond computers going off, plus an XP-based meltdown on my old laptop, making a re-installation of the operating system a must.
Anyway, here are the latest stats.

Re: Download speed up during 'open questions', down again when closed

Hi Mick, what does the event log say?
You've had 2 LOS since the firmware upgrade, have you rebooted at all?
One maybe possibly have been a line test. Otherwise, put into context, DS sync speed is par for the course, the US sync speed always has been a touch lower than one might hope for, but the errors look considerably better than the last stats.
Whilst that speed test was disappointing, try another - you may have just hit a moment when things were busy on the network, also how are you finding the connection whilst doing your normal usage?

Info Jun 5

This is the first time I've looked at anything since the firmware upgrade, so I've done nothing to prompt router restarts, cold or warm. In fact due to my computer crashing this is the first time I've been using the internet to any extent in over a week.
Ookla gave me a download speed of 7 Mbps, Uswitch an upload speed of 0.6 Mbps, which is about normal since all the work done to move my router nearer the BT socket and to stabilise my connection. Ookla always displays the best download speed, and Uswitch the best upload speed. Performance online seems just as it was, from what I can see in my limited time back online. Prior to my computer having a nervous breakdown, I was trying to watch some cinema trailers on the Odeon listings website (other cinemas are available) and the trailers were freezing and jerking....totally unwatchable. Having said that, the same night my mate watched a full episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on 4oD that he'd missed, on my computer, with no trouble, so apart from anything that my computer might have been doing with its impending meltdown, I assumed the sticky Odeon videos were down to the Odeon website.

Re: Download speed up during 'open questions', down again when closed

It could have been some congestion at the time causing your jerky trailers. If you encounter that again, try a speedtest just to see what that gives and if the problem continues, try a Gateway hop, log in to your modem/router and go to the Internet Box, click Disconnect. This drops the PPP session to the ISP. Wait about 30 seconds and then Click Connect. You will hopefully be on a different Gateway.
You can check which Gateway you are on both before and after the hop.
Edit: sorry forgot to say, the limited size GUI log doesn't show anything of interest, the Telnet one may show that last drop but probably not worth looking at.

Re: Download speed up during 'open questions', down again when closed

I'd been thinking recently just how well things were going, no need to check and monitor anything, no need to go on forums....ahem.
I've had two spontaneous ADSL disconnections in the last 12 hours, one while I was browsing the Internet, late last night (on my TV - I was too tired and too lazy to boot the computer) and one this morning while watching catch-up TV. So I've done a few stat readings to post here to see if anyone can pick up on anything, when they've got time. Unfortunately, because it has been a while since I've been on here and gone through this, I can't recall right this minute what the majority of the numbers mean again! Plus I have to get ready for work, as ever....
I took all the following readings BEFORE doing a controlled 'soft' disconnection and reconnection from within the Technicolor Router Gateway, less than half an hour ago. I did this because I found my download speed was okay, but my upload speed was poor, and I remember being told a soft restart can improve things - before sunset. Avoiding line noise and vampires. Unfortunately, at this time, the upload speed continues to be poor. By doing the controlled disconnection, I understand that my IP address will have changed, so I've not edited any of the details in the posted stats.
I just tried calling BT 17070 - that is the number for line tests, isn't it? They were engaged!!!
Anyway, my stats....

That's very odd. Do you have problems making any other calls?
The rest of the line looks ok, can't see any obvious issues. The sync, attenuation and SNR seem fine, it's obvious the throughput that's lower than ideal.

Re: Download speed up during 'open questions', down again when closed

I don't think I made any other calls today but just before I left the house to go to work, literally as I was at the door, I dialled 17070 again and got through. No noise on the line. I also remembered that some road works are taking place on the main road near my estate. Wondering if they were related to phone lines, I took a walk there before driving to work to see and ask. Turns out the contractors were working for Western Power, but one of the guys told me Openreach engineers had been working opposite them for two days on an unrelated job. They weren't around today for my second drop-out, but the guy working for Western Power said he thought the Openreach people had got some sort of major incident that they were attending to. Whether that has any bearing on my problems over the last 24 hours is anyone's guess.
Thanks for checking the figures, anyhow.  Smiley

Re: Download speed up during 'open questions', down again when closed

Hello Mick, sorry to see you got some issues again. Well there might be a combination of things going on here. Leaving the possibility of Openreach's incident having some effect, messing with power lines especially if they are HV ones may also have contributed to some interference.
According to the stats, which I'm assuming were after you looked at the log, your DS sync speed is down marginally but as the SNRM at the time of the stats was slightly higher than 6dB a resync might resolve that BUT your US sync speed is HALF what it was and should be, and the SNRM is also proportionately high, again a resync may resolve this IF the source of the problem has gone away.
BUT when you look at the log entry it's clear there's been a further loss of sync between the log and the stats as the DS sync speed was nearer what it should be with the relevant SNRM, but the US sync speed was lower than normal with a lower than normal SNRM.
This all suggests (with the fact a further drop had also occurred) that issues were/are still present.
I would tend to wait until Western Power have finished their work, and assuming Openereach aren't poking around either, if the stats look similar, I would try a further graceful daytime resync.
It would be helpful if Chris could just post the current WBC profile so we are sure it is what we'd expect to see.

Re: Download speed up during 'open questions', down again when closed

Hi Chris. I've got a brand new surge protection block to install at the back of my stereo (where my router plugs in) but I want to shorten the lead first, because it is 1metre long and only needs to be about one foot! So having had this hanging around for a couple of weeks now, I intend fitting it Saturday morning, which will entail shutting down the router for a while, so the a re-synch will occur then - though I take your point about the Western Power people working down the road. If tomorrow's re-synch doesn't help my upload speeds, then I will try again after they have gone. Fortunately my download speeds remain okay for my type of connection, which is where I notice most deficiencies if I'm watching catch-up TV, though of course broadband dropping right out (which is what alerted me to the problem) doesn't help.
I bought the new surge protection block after the thunderstorms of a few weeks ago. I personally experienced no problems, but a lightening strike on a tree close to my mother and stepfather took out one of their telephones and their Sky Box, and tripped their power supply (and all of their neighbour's) and my old dad, who lives miles away, also lost his TV signal following the storms, but in his case it was an aerial amplifier plugged directly into a socket that failed, although it is not clear if it was on its way out anyway. His TV and DVD player were plugged into a surge protection block, and were okay, but the neon lights on the block had faded, as have mine - but they do that anyway through age. Those blocks that have a green light reckon that if the light is gone, there is no surge protection, which is why I've bought a new one.  What confuses me is that some surge protection blocks only offer a 'power indication' lamp, or no lamp at all!
