Quote from: Santiago I have never had a virus from those places but I do have good software that protects my computer very well.
I thought there was lots of places you could get viruses from. Just being on the internet has the risk of viruses doesn't it?
This is false.
If you don't respond (allow access) to external programs, then you don't get any malware.
Text usenet is safer than email, since you can't execute text!
P2P is as safe as the place you got it from - so it's quite as good as ftp or http - especially if you're provided with a security key.

Yes the source of software has to be reputable, hence the reason (apart from it being illegal) I've never downloaded cracked software.which I bet usenet is awash with.
In the same way in the eight years nearly I've been online at home I've never bothered with IRC because I cant be doing with a lot of the people that use it.
I may give it a shot one day just to say I've given it a go.

Quote from: techguy Don't go near P2P/usenet, am talking about legitimate things such as Linux packages or Windows updates
For Linux you can use the sleep command, e.g.:
sleep 37m; apt-get <update/upgrade/install>; wget <loads_of_downloads>
For MSWindows I believe you will need to set something up in Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Scheduled Tasks.

Suppose I should really dust off my WSH skills to collect the updates and then shut down
