Re: Peak time latency spikes

I agree about finding the one that consistently works best for you  -  I find "Xilo" works best for me.
On speedtest.net,  you can 'save' your chosen server.
In the top right hit 'SETTINGS', then in the "Global Settings" choose your "Preferred Server".
Next time you run a test, you will see a new button that allows you to test your preferred server - without having to select it from the map.

Re: Peak time latency spikes

There is another problem we are aware of.  They might be causing those graphing lifts and dropping a couple of meg of speed as well.  That's a device problem though, rather than config and we've been talking to the vendor for weeks on it.

Re: Peak time latency spikes

@Kelly - does that affect all speed testers or just speedtest.net ?
Does it explain why my speedtests are recently often 500Kbps less than my profile, even off peak ?

Ha, I reckon everyone is using Milton Keynes now, I've just had the most erratic results that I've had in months including !+Mbps above my profile  Roll_eyes

I always use Milton Keynes because that has always given me the "best" results

I noticed quite a few people end up using Uno's MK servers for pingtest.net but I didn't get why that was the lowest ping. In theory, the London servers should the lower pings as that is where PN's gateways are based. They certainly give me the lowest pings and I live in Milton Keynes!! Also, Uno/Xilo use BE's network, I believe, so there is an extra hop or so in there.

Re: Peak time latency spikes

Well tonight my 8-10pm speed drop time window has passed and there was only a small drop in speed of a few Mbps down  (2-3) rather than the massive 40+ I normally get. Now I can live with that especialy since Kelly says they are aware of this as a separate hardware problem they are looking into.
Only problem I had over weekend was the Saturday morning for an hour when both up and down speeds dropped very low for an hour, then down returned to normal but up speed stayed low for a while. It may have been the BT speed test as speedtest.net/thinkbroadband both gave normal speeds. Undecided

Re: Peak time latency spikes

More variation than I was expecting. Anyway, it looks like my problem was down to speedtest.net servers. Phew!  Huh

Re: Peak time latency spikes

Or not... getting very lumpy results now, with speeds to the 3 servers I just tried bouncing up and down wildly during the tests.

Oh look, its 5am and no one is awake....Funny isnt it that...but of course it must be something to do with my router/wiring/pc/laptop that my speeds drop come peak time!!!!!

Re: Peak time latency spikes

@englishrick,
No one is not saying it could be congestion at your exchange at peak times but you need to rule out all other possibilities so PN can give BT some real data to show it could be.
If as you say and seem convinced that it's congestion (and I'm not saying it's not) then it's over to BT and I wish you all the luck in the world having to wait for them to upgrade the exchange and install more capacity to your linked exchange.
At least you think you have found out what your problem is then you don't seem to be suffering from the same problem a near complete collapse of speed well under 10Mbps that  others have been during peak time on fibre, Your speed has dropped but it's still faster than some can get without the peak time problem, your  last slow post was 37Mbps. mine for example was 3.6Mbps from 51Mbps and that was Saturday morning. I'd be happy with a slowdown to a slow 37Mbps at peak times during this period of problems.
Maybe now you can try and help others and PN who are still trying to workout what the problem is as they have with your problem?

Last nights results from my whitebox which is showing a great improvement over the last 3 weeks

Re: Peak time latency spikes

Maybe Bright has posted some interesting speed test results from different Speedtest.net servers. Could our speed tests at curtain times from these servers be part of the problem why not all users on the same gateway have a drop in speed problem. I for one tend to stick with one server at Milton Keynes for speed tests, could be nothing or something else to rule out apart from congestion ::).
