End of Day: Monday 16th June

So it's the start of a new week at PlusNet, and for a Monday, today seems to have zipped past like lightning! Its also a very special day as the Brightview Phase 2 project was launched today and everything seems to be going "swimmingly" so far, well done everybody! As always, I would like to apologise for my bad spelling and grammar, which are more than likely to appear in this EOD, in fact we might as well of given it to "Mr Magoo" as he'd probably done a better job of the typing than me! Anyway's down to business... Starting us off today we have Chris from Comms:

Off we go again for another comms EOD. We've all been doing various things today and I'll briefly run through them below. Matt - Updating and creating Best Practices, handling dev CC's and keeping an eye on problems. Chris - Ensuring that initial problem investigation is performed along with continued work on the cust sat survey. I've also been spotted around the forums today. Boblé - He's been getting ready for his holiday by ensuring that I'm booked into many many meeting in his place, he's also handled networks change controls and vanished for a fair while this afternoon into a meeting (or so he says). Jameseh - Not sure and I'm not going to ask what James has been up to, no doubt it involves sacrificial goats and buffalo mozzarella as normal. It wouldn't be the comms EOD without a random link, so here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpZMvJikkA0

Next up is Ben with the following update from Networks:

Hi, Ben from Networks here. I've spent the day looking at a few of the problems in our pool, in particular a problem with our internal mail platform which is causing a slight delay for incoming mail for an hour or so in the morning. I'm hoping I've found the cause and am waiting for my request to go through our rigorous change control process so I can apply my fix for it. Dunk and Rick have been doing some mopping up from the parbin services move last week, which went impressively smoothly. Michael has been looking at some of the other problems in our pool. Dan's been doing his usual hard work on customer tickets and keeping an eye on our abuse mailbox, and Aaron has been catching up with parbin mail support. Russ has been keeping his eagle eyes on our monitoring systems and nipping quick problems in the bud, as well as reminding me how to use cacti. Over in the DBA corner John's been reprocessing usage reports after the weekends ellacoya outage, Marks been looking at MI reports and Al's been monitoring and doing some ad hoc tasks. Josh has been writing the database backup training material and doing some tidying up after a rollout from the weekend. Mike's been looking at sledb resilience and Ian's been working on a future product. Geoff has been setting up a test environment for a new version of JBoss (a java servlet thing we use), and working on some training materials for us Ops guys on our new internal authentication platform.

Martyn gives us the following update from Marketing:

We've been hard at work in the Marketing team today, with Chris and Amy crunching numbers for most of the day. I'd ask for more details but they're in a meeting at the moment to present their findings. The rest of us have been brainstorming ideas for our business sales pages, as well as attending various meetings for our other projects.

The penultimate submission comes from Rick in Development:

Hello All, Rick here in dev. I have just written a rather long post for the blog regarding my whirlwind weekend attending the Isle of Wight music festival so look out for that, but as such I will keep this short. The team mostly has been working their asses off on BV2 and it all came to fruition around 2am this morning when we did the final DNS flip. This has been an epic development cycle that has engaged most of the dept. A huge milestone and amazing effort to all involved, so well done everyone. So today for me has comprised picking up an internal project that was put on hold due to the BV project. Some really constructive meetings and ideas about taking our member centre to places no member centre has gone before. We plan on doing a full public beta for this so look out for it soon on the PlusNet site. Other than that, some BV wrap up and loosing my voice due to much audience participation at the music fest... so I am gonna sign off now.... Rick.

...and last but in no way least, we have James from Web Development:

Matt - preliminary MyAccount research Jonny - MyAccount analysis Kelly - weekly planning and MyAccount related work Pete - weekly planning, MyAccount related work, and then some Brightview phase 2 problems and bugs management Sam - careers news updates Andrew - working on PlusNet content problems Rupert - MyAccount planning, email tool planning, and wrestling with his proxy Project Team (Mark, Nick, Wojtek, and Grzegorz) - Brightview phase 2 problem and bug fixing. I've been further developing our in house employee of the month voting tool, so that it behaves more dynamically. Also I've sent a request to Wordpress for permission to host the Twitter plugin on their site.

So that's it for this sunny Monday afternoon. I hope you have all enjoyed reading this as much as I have editing it Smiley So in my usual style I will leave you with another one of my words of wisdom, good night all: "The future is here. It's just not widely distributed yet." William Gibson
