You just plug the telephone wire into the laptop and then into  the telephone socket at the other end (exactly as we used to do in dialup days).
Of course, the lappy does have to be equipped with a modem. Not sure if they all are these days.

My Dell Inspiron 1545 does not have a telephone modem.... so if I need to go on Dial-Up... I have to use one of these......

a tiny usb modem and a 1p per minute off peak 56kbit dial service
for when any asdl line goes wrong

Using another internet service provider isn't necessary; Plusnet offer their own dialup number for anyone who wants to connect at local rates using their normal username and password – you can find it here.
Anyway, I fear this thread is going a bit off-topic… perhaps we should think about dragging things back on to the subject of multifunction printers.

I did not say it was "necessary" ..... I just said  that is the one I use....
