I've bought the cheapest own-brand stuff from Dabs and it's been fine. Had several of their wireless USB units.
Also used Netgear which is equally good.
The Dabs stuff doesn't suffer from over-complex management software, just load the drivers, turn off it's own management/configuration tools and use Windows.

thanks for the reply. ive now borrowed a belkin usb stick and got the wireless network connection running ok. when i try to set up the WEP key from the router, it tells me that it needs a 40 bit encription code where as the router only uses 64 or 128 bit. could this be caused by XP not having the correct updates? any ideas
Thanks

Craig - you really should use WPA rather than WEP, as WEP is not considered secure.
