Charge pumps "use" AC but don't convert DC to AC and back as you initially stated was required.

This was the modern type of voltage step up electronic circuit I was thinking off
this uses the integrated circuit CD4093 acting as frequency drives
to high current drive mosfets BUZ11 to make output current
collect in the two output series coupled capacitors to total up
voltage and act as voltage doubler's to the input supply voltage

If anyone does use a laptop while driving - don't put it on top of the dashboard like this pillock !
Dashboard laptop lorry driver stopped by police = http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-tayside-central-11444583

No comments about having a laptop on while driving but if you do it as a passenger be warned - your hard drive has moving parts which don't react well from shock - IE bumps in the road. I speak from personal experience. If you must, get a solid state drive.
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!
