Ok @Townman, not all refuseniks, but I'm sure there are plenty of people with compatible machines who are in no hurry to engage in a new battle to try to stop Microsoft's apparent intention to dictate how they use them.

Am I the only one concerned that this is only free if you agree to have your 'PC settings' saved by Microsoft and the PC tied to a Microsoft account ?

It sounds too much like signing up to a time-[explosivedevice] dated 13 October 2026.

You have choices - free under the requirements - or do something else which might cost you money.

If folks want stuff for free, there is a fair probability that there will be some compliance requirements; getting it for free on the terms a user dictates is likely to be an expectation set up for disappointment

Re: Upgrade an old laptop to Windows 11?

Old thread I know, but I also signed up to the MS extension late last year when my settings prompted me to get it free (since I`m all backed up using OneDrive and have a MS account) so I grabbed it with both hands to allow me some time to look at Windows 11 laptops.

I fully intend to replace my now too old Advent Roma 2001 laptop Bought back in 2011 from Curry`s refurbished at a cost of £299 with free delivery!) And to think it boots up just as it did back in the day, works just fine and unless it`s legs give way, would probably be okay for another  few years but alas.....it`s too old to get Windows 11 and for what it`s worth, I don`t fancy doing my brains in trying. 🙄

Once it`s unwired from the internet, I can still use it as a toy for documenting and dabbling with I suppose, or I could attempt downloading Chrome OS Flex, or one of the Linux programs on it once I have a newer laptop up and running with all my stuff safely on board.

It feels like saying goodbye to a trusty of friend having to look for a newer (and possibly may not even last as long as this one has) laptop. But like most things now, our hands are held behind our backs to move on or crumble with the ashes. Reading above what other forum members have done/tried, it`s good to know there are alternative routes to take, albeit for me would be like pulling teeth trying.
