Fibre 75 install - no usable connection Powerline to WAP

Hi Guys,

we finally got FTTP in the area so I signed up for Fibre 75. It’s delivering great speed at the router and over Wi-Fi by the Plusnet2 router but the connection via the TPlink powerline adaptors to my BThome hub configured as a WAP (as @baldrick gave great instructions for some years ago) is not stable at all (middle powerline lights constantly flashing).

I’ve powered everything down then back up in sequence- that didn’t resolve it. I’ve repaired the powerline adaptors - that didn’t resolve it. I’ve ordered up a couple of new cat6 patch cables to see if that might be the issue.

Any other ideas to try?

when I get round to it I’m going to install a POE Gigabtye switch and run cat 6 cable to the WAP and out into the garden to get coverage using an outdoor WAP there but I need the powerline adaptors to bridge the gap in the meantime.

Unless damaged, network cables usually keep working for years.

Do you need to adjust the IPs of the Powerline adaptors or the BThome hub configured as a WAP
so suit the new internet service ?

Which adapters are you using?

If the symbol looks like a house, it will be because they can't see each other, do they sync together when next to each other?

Only the WAP/powerline adapters would have an IP Address

For some reason there is now a connection.
Yes I did re-pair the powerline adaptors side by side.
Maybe it took a time for the WAP and router to re-establish a handshake? WiFi speed from the WAP very variable 14-39mbps on a short sample but we know the issues with powerline adaptors and noise on the circuit.
I was surprised to get around 50% of the main router speed when signed into it at the other end of the house so maybe experimenting without the WAP would be worthwhile.

The powerline adaptors are TP-Link TL-PA4010s to answer a previous question.

TP-Link TL-PA4010s  do not have IP settings.  

They do have a very handy Utility that allows you to see how well they are connecting
and if available it can apply firmware updates.

If the TL-PA4010s are in the identical position to before they should work as before.

An easy test is to remove the BT router/WAP and plug a laptop into the network socket
of the remote TL-PA4010

I've had five years trouble free use using TP-Link TL-PA4010, I used the TP-WPA4220 for the remote, this had the advantage of two 100 Mbps LAN ports. CAT6 cable are unlikely to help as you only require CAT5, The maximum achieved speed for me was 90 Mbps.

After upgrading to Full Fibre I've starting using TP-Link TL-WPA7617 kit.

You are unlikely going to see the speeds of 75 Mbps due to noise and possible speed restrictions due to the technology used in RCD and MCR found in the electrical consumer unit.

The tpTLC is a handy app; there is also a Google/Apple version although it is not possible to upgrade firmware.

Note of caution, NOT all versions of the PA4010 have a firmware upgrade available.

My ethernet cables come from various sources over a career around the IT space so I'm not really sure of their specs, hence the upgrade. They're also white which will be a welcome change from the black decor wise.
I'm actually pleasantly surprised by the initial speeds I'm achieving at the other end of the house from the main router and I reconfigured the Fire stick to use that WiFi signal and streamed very happily last night. I even had some connection over a sundowner well down the garden.
So I will experiment to see if the main router may suffice and whether an outdoor WAP or resisted secondary WAP router will service the garden adequately. Otherwise I will run Cat6 to benefit from full speed throughout.
