Apart from old age (June 2016) and running Win7 is there any reason for the computer to freeze and require the old switch off/ switch on routine to get it back up and running.
Happening at least once daily now - 3 times yesterday.
Before any suggests I buy a new computer I like Win7 besides which I also have an NUC box running Linux with Win7 in a virtual window.

Any clues in the Event Viewer ?
There has been a couple of unofficial updates :
UpdatePack7R2-25.12.10 & UpdatePack7R2 26.1.15 (probably more.....)

Have you tried the 'usual'? Full disc scan, full memory scan, for faults?

Is this what you're looking for re Event Log - see attached file
I've run a Dsk Chk and full scan but only with Microsoft Essentials (I think that's what it's called).

CPU overheating, possibly requiring thermal paste replacement?

I have a silent nofan computer. I'm not sure if it has any thermal paste. See attached image.

It will most likely have thermal paste, alternatively a thermal pad, between the CPU and its heatsink.

Yes it will have, but unless already installed, Win7 will need a third party utility downloading to display the info.

Give this a try.
open Task Scheduler and at the left hand side look for Microsoft and follow the path to
Windows \ PI \ Secure-Boot-Update.
then disable it.
Restart your computer.

Understood, @RobPN . Even my Zorin laptop needed that, although there were a number of options. Honestly don't know if installed anything on my W7 machine, but I'd be surprised if I didn't.

I think I might try adding a slow speed fan to the back of the case (where you would normally see a fan).
Overheating is a good theory.

Having dealt with many hundreds of users and their boxes I’ve only ever seen one hardware failure, the A30 gate wouldn’t open, eventually learnt this particulate box didn’t have that option. So unless @bmc is an enthusiast who likes to change the hardware I’d suspect the OS or running software. Run the task manager at the side and watch for any ‘doubtful’ processes. Try a virus scan etc……
