How about using another browser....e.g. Firefox or Opera ?  and see if the problem still happens.

Not an option, unfortunately. It's an old tablet with only 32 GB of storage - nearly 8 reserved for system functions. I don't have the luxury of multiple installed browsers just for times like this. I got an expansion card for it, but you can't launch apps from it (presumably because it would be too slow), so it's only good for media files.
