Are modems becoming obsolete?

Looking for a replacement ASDL modem/router I noticed there were very few, Netgear for example only seem to offer routers.

Is that because of the switch to broadband phonelines?

No, it's due to the switch to full fibre (FTTP) or cable as broadband is being fazed out across the world.

It's only ADSL and FTTC that needs a modem.

Why do you need a replacement?

Re: Are modems becoming obsolete?

My current dual band Netgear Nighthawk appears to have stopped transmitting a 2G wi-fi signal. TVs and other devices that were connected via 2G suddenly stopped working, they either see the device but can't connect or just don't see the Netgear2G.

Devices using the 5G connection are OK, I don't understand why oldish TVs hook to the 5G but the newer ones only see 2G.

Re: Are modems becoming obsolete?

@christmas The above post would have been better in your other topic, but it sounds like your Nighthawk has developed a fault - have you tried rebooting it?

Re: Are modems becoming obsolete?

I think there are a combination of problems, modem and broadband.

Tried resetting the modem, although the set up indicates there is 2G.....devices still unable to see 2G.

Have ordered a TP-Link AC2100 Wireless MU-MIMO VDSL/ADSL Modem Router

the advantage of the TP-Link device you are buying come the day you get Full Fibre you can still carrying using it by switching to Wireless Router Mode, you will need DSL Router Mode for now.
