Router Connection Slow to Broadband

Since mid-September (started at the time of ticket 82855), my router takes up to 30 minutes for the power light to switch from red to green, and often the DSL light is not flashing at all.  I have found that the only solution is to keep switching the router on and off until it eventually quickly establishes a good connection ... this is an unacceptable solution.  Advise please ... thanks in advance.

Re: Router Connection Slow to Broadband

The fact that the power light is so slow has nothing to do with establishing a good connection.
It indicates either a dodgy router or power supply or the power socket has a problem
If you plug the router into a different power socket does the power light change to green quickly or do you still get the same problem - this check doesn't need to router connected to the phone line.
If the problem is solved - unlikely in my opinion - then it is the power point
If the problem isn't solved then the router/power supply is faulty and should either be replaced under warranty (if less than 12 months old) or a new one offered for the price of the P&P
I have assumed that you are on ADSL rather than fibre as you haven't mentioned the BT Modem
Not having any idea what the tickets say I am surprised that this wasn't suggested as a check and hence I have left this in Feedback for the present

Re: Router Connection Slow to Broadband

Jim, ... Thanks for your suggestions.  The power point, router, etc all seem OK ... testing has shown that it is taking about 30 minutes for the power light to turn green and then the internet connection is established within a few minutes. Tonight the same pattern was repeated but connection displayed the browser warning message  "The BTWholesale access circuit to your Service Provider is currently down." ... just have the feeling that these problems are related to BT / PlusNet capacity issues either at the local exchange or in northern England.  It would be nice for PlusNet to investigate this warning message from 8pm on 16/10.  Thanks again for your help.

Re: Router Connection Slow to Broadband

Hi Eric,
This all points at a faulty router in my opinion. If the power light is taking that long to switch to green it's telling me it's the actual router that's at fault.
Last night, specifically, there was a problem which was affecting new connections between 17:30 - 21:30 and if you were turning your router on and off it's likely that your connection was put into the BTW "walled garden" whilst the issue was being resolved. Sorry about that Sad
I've had a look at your connection graph and it looks like the router is being turned off every day at around 9am and then turned back on between 7pm and 8pm. I would definitely advise AGAINST the router being turned off every day and then back on again because this is likely to cause Dynamic Line Management to kick in and band your line which may result in your speed decreasing because DLM thinks that your line is unstable performing at the speed it's set at.

We can arrange for a new router to be dispatched to you, however, there is a £5.99 postage and packaging fee to pay.

Re: Router Connection Slow to Broadband

Thanks for getting back to me, Eric! Glad to hear that it's all working correctly with the new router now Smiley
Any further issues don't hesitate to get in touch and remember, don't be switching your router on and off every day Wink
