Re: Plusnet Total useless

It does - and if the games server happened to be in the house next door it would still go all the way to London and back.
The best way for Plusnet users to see the difference their distance from London and interleaving status makes is to ping a server in the London Plusnet data suite such as one of the DNS servers.
E.g. Near Brighton, interleaving off:
C:\Documents and Settings\John>ping 212.159.6.9
Pinging 212.159.6.9 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 212.159.6.9: bytes=32 time=11ms TTL=251
Reply from 212.159.6.9: bytes=32 time=12ms TTL=251
Reply from 212.159.6.9: bytes=32 time=12ms TTL=251
Reply from 212.159.6.9: bytes=32 time=12ms TTL=251
Ping statistics for 212.159.6.9:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 11ms, Maximum = 12ms, Average = 11ms

Edit: Here's the result of pinging a Sheffield server which shows how much time the London/Sheffield round trip adds:
C:\Documents and Settings\John>ping portal.plus.net
Pinging portal.plus.net [212.159.8.2] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 212.159.8.2: bytes=32 time=20ms TTL=246
Reply from 212.159.8.2: bytes=32 time=21ms TTL=246
Reply from 212.159.8.2: bytes=32 time=21ms TTL=246
Reply from 212.159.8.2: bytes=32 time=21ms TTL=246
Ping statistics for 212.159.8.2:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 20ms, Maximum = 21ms, Average = 20ms

Re: Plusnet Total useless

Well an update to my situation, havent tried my new setup but my speed tests look really good so hopefiully i will have no further issues.

Just read up on this post just now.  A lot of interesting comments Smiley  Can I just clear somthing up in my own mind though...This all started because you didn't get as fast a connection for the PN ADSL Max connection as you did with the O2 ADSL2+ connection you had before?  Because, you know, I would have thought that a speed loss from downgrading would have been kinda obvious Tongue
That said, how's things moving along? I use my PS3 online with the Pro package too, and TBH I have not set port forwarding, Port Triggering, UPNP or DMZ for it, but it still works ok.

**Edited to add**
I just ran a comparison of 3 different speed testers back to back, one was the much bashed speedtester.net, second was thinkbroadband's speed test and third was PN's speed test, the results seem to be in the deffence of speedtester.net all three were very close to my BT speedtest result which is at the bottom.

It wasnt the speed i was concerned about it was that i could play online FPS games. Speed was the only information i could use to prove my point. Also my speed is only slightly lower than O2 on download but the upload was half of what i got from o2 , ping is about the same, but as my traffic is prioritised ,this should make a difference in theory.
Whatsort of games do you play cos some games are more prone to noticable lag than others ?
I use speedtest.net as a guide, if it gives good results then people say oh yeah if it gives bad results then it doesnt work properly, lol, im sure if you did enough speed tests you would find one that gives you a good result, the proof is in the playing online.
As i have always used speedtest.net for all my connections ive had ,its a good comparisin tool. The ping results can be up and down like the other results but as ive said in a previous post you have to do alot of tests and take the average and then its still only a guide although im more likley to believe speedtest than most ISP's
If you want more acuurate reading then your going into safemode or comman prompt, or even some software from the net, Dan Elwels Speed checker works well.
As for setups , i think alot depends on the router you are using too, a belkin i had you needed UPNP disabled to a lynsys you needed it enabled, also id imagine firwalls differ too. Im not in IT so couldnt comment any further except to say that when you know you know, Haven had a good connection you know what you should be getting.
One last point i lost about 20 ping switching to fastpath , thats a good thing so dont investigate.

Re: Plusnet Total useless

Not at all, I do like FPS games, I just hate being limited by a joypad while playing them.  If I play an FPS it's on the PC with keyboard and mouse.  I liked it when Halo first came out on the PC and everyone online with an XBox just became fodder for the PC players....those were the days  Grin  Of cource it only took them a month or two to set up seporate servers and spoil the fun

Re: Plusnet Total useless

I used to play Renaged on the pc with mouse and keyboard, great way to play, shame you cant use them on the ps3 though.
I havent played renegade for ages, will have to dig it out and have another go of it. Too many hacks though, thats why i stopped playing it in the first place.
Well my connection worked ok last night, i was expecting great things but overall it was just ok. As long as its not affecting my KD ratio then i will be happy.
Id have liked to write some good things about plusnet connection but all i can say is it's ok for online gaming. No better than O2 really, id say it was about the same.
They have been very helpful latley though so not complaining. I just have to think about is it value for money now.
Thanks for all the help everyone.Lets hope i have no more issues and can play happily for the rest of my time here.

Moderators - is it not time that this thread was locked as the OP now seems to be moderately satisfied? Would now seem that the title is inappropriate. The discussion could be continued, and might be better placed in Gaming IMO.

It wasn't a personal attack at all - it was a comment about the delicious irony of somebody making a grammatical error in a statement criticising somebody else.
/sighs.
Oh yeah, whilst we are here - it would have been nice to send me a PM to let me know you were removing a post I made.
/sighs again.

And on that note... no more. This thread is going round and round in ever decreasing circles....
