port forwarding

hi, I have set up port forwarding before with sky for a server for ark. I have tried to redo the this with the PlusNet hub 2 router and I have created the rule for the port forwarding on the same device as before so it cant be an issue with my pc firewall settings. However when I go on the port forwarding checker it says that it is closed I have looked through other forums but cant find anything. Any help is appreciated.

Re: port forwarding

@dan2002

Have you checked the >Advanced Settings >Technical Log > Event log for connection attempts?

They will be in this format

hh.mm.ss.  dd mmm. FWL Port Forward Server(destination IP Address) <TCP or UDP> <incoming port> accepted a new connection from <source IP Address>

Here is an example using UDP

16:15:00, 12 Jun  FWL Port Forward Server(192.168.10.252) UDP 53262 accepted a new connection from 85.255.235.53

Remember the device the port forward rule points to has to be active and listening for incoming connections to report the port is open.

Re: port forwarding

yes I checked the log and when I check if the port is open it comes up saying accepted new connection but on the port checker it says it is closed so I believe it is accepting data but to returning it if that's how it works.

Re: port forwarding

I have also tried disabling firewalls on the pc and broadband temporarily to see if this would change anything but it didn't.

Re: port forwarding

when I check if the port is open it comes up saying accepted new connection

That would indicate that the Hub 2 does have a port forwarding rule configured.

Is the destination IP address correct ? i.e the one allocated to the PC

Is your PC listening on the correct port ?

Re: port forwarding

yes it comes up with my pc on the dropdown and I have also checked the Ip address and verified it on the command prompt. and the port I put in for the internal and external ports are all the same and the same as the ones used on previous WIFI which all worked. i have also tried changing the port to another known one for my game and that didn't work either.

Re: port forwarding

Is there any server config on your PC ? is it still only listening on the previous IP that it was allocated by the old router ?

Re: port forwarding

I'm not sure if it was so I just changed my Ip address then updated everything to make sure and it still says closed.

Re: port forwarding

Is your PC configured for DHCP or a static IP ? if the latter, do you have the correct gateway IP ?

Re: port forwarding

I'm not sure I have never configured that but on the command prompt it says DHCP enabled?

Re: port forwarding

but on the command prompt it says DHCP enabled

In that case it should be ok.

TBH from the Hub event log , it looks like the port forwarding is working and the problem lies in the PC.

If it was me, then at this point I'd use wireshark to see if the PC is actually getting the connection attempts and replying thereto.

Re: port forwarding

Fix

and I haven't changed any pc settings since

Whilst you havent changed anything specifically, the IP address that the PC is being allocated by DHCP will have changed and also the address of the gateway will have changed. The network subnet may also have changed ISTR Sky routers tend to use 192.168.0.x as the default subnet whereas the PN Hub 2 will be using 192.168.1.x. If anything in the ark server has 'remembered' settings from the previous installation , then that could be causing the problem.
