Re: help with OpenWRT on HubOne

.@MisterW Thank you!!! It works now. I am thrilled. Solution found here:

https://forum.openwrt.org/t/connecting-to-plusnet-broadband/209129

Totally different to the (incorrect) instructions at :

https://openwrt.org/toh/bt/homehub_v5a

Re: help with OpenWRT on HubOne

@AOR1 glad you got it working but those are the instructions for VDSL (FTTC)!

I thought you said you were on ADSL ?

Re: help with OpenWRT on HubOne

Yes I am on ADSL. And so is the person on the OpenWRT forum. They said "I am in the UK, and this is via a normal phone line, no fibre box or anything like that". Same with me. I can't explain how it worked, just very glad it did 🙂

Re: help with OpenWRT on HubOne

Ah! just because your connection is via a phone line doesnt mean its ADSL!

It is DSL but there are two variants , ADSL which can be up to around 20Mb download but only 1Mb upload  and VDSL which is up to 80Mb download and 20Mb upload. VDSL is whats used for FTTC(Fibre to the cabinet) where a high speed fibre is connected to your local cabinet and then the DSL signal is connected from there rather than with ADSL where it goes all the way back to the exchange. This means that the DSL signal has a much shorter distance to travel and thus can achieve much higher speeds. However in order to do this the signals and protocols are completely different. So where as ADSL uses ATM , VDSL uses PTM and requires a VLAN ID to be set.

If that configuration works, then you must be on an FTTC connection using VDSL

Re: help with OpenWRT on HubOne

Sorry I got it wrong - should have followed VDSL instructions. I saw one mention of Plusnet here https://openwrt.org/toh/bt/homehub_v5a and blindly followed that, assuming I must be ADSL. Sorry again.

Re: help with OpenWRT on HubOne

No problem, I'm just glad we got there in the end.

I've found the Openwrt forum very useful

@AOR1

Putting aside the benefits of an openWRT modem/router, I'm interested what were you using before?

Re: help with OpenWRT on HubOne

.@Dan_the_Van I was running a HubTwo. I have a hacker problem so I am hoping the change of router upgrades my security.

Re: help with OpenWRT on HubOne

@AOR1

thanks for confirming, was the Hub two reporting messages for DoS(Port Scanning) or DoS(Spoofing) or DoS(UDP Loopback)?

This is normal as the event log is reporting the firewall it's protecting your connection, they should not be of concern, however worrying they look.

The Hub One with standard firmware does not report these events.

Re: help with OpenWRT on HubOne

.@Dan_the_Van It's ages since I took a look at the Hub Two's log files so I can't answer your question. And I have just done a factory reset on it. I have a problem with surveillance by someone who has had direct access to my home so all my devices are under suspicion, not just the Hub Two.
