Yes, but what 'Broadband' service is now at the premises? Who came to put the router where it is?
Normally for the ordinary FTTC (non fibre) contract nobody needs to come to the house. The router is posted and where it is put is up to the people living there - plugged into a power point and the Openreach phone socket; though the cable for this is fairly short.
With full fibre there is a physical install, so someone has to attend, but the position the installed ONT is put is a compromise between where there is a power point and where the person at home would like it put. The router is then plugged into the ONT by an Ethernet cable and gets power from the power socket.
If it's a PN Hub 2 router there is quite a long power lead from the power unit and this allows a lot of freedom over where the router is placed. It's the connection between the router and the ONT (if there is one) which may leave them close together. However the Ethernet cable from the router to the ONT can, in effect, be as long as you like. Subject to convenience.

What is the router plugged into on the wall? An Openreach telephone socket or an ONT (a small, newly installed, box with lights on top)?

Right, so it is Full Fibre - I assume 3 green lights on the top?. You can reposition the router itself by using a longer Ethernet cable between the 'small box' and the router itself. It just needs a power socket.

Sorry, the Virgin 'box'/connection is no good for Plusnet, it is a totally different infrastructure.

He could have put it somewhere else better.

He probably could, but I doubt Openreach will reposition the ONT . I suggest you obtain a longer Ethernet cable, and move the router.
