Ubiquiti or Unifi Express 7 Router - login detail

Hi all,

My old/ancient router (TP Archer) finally kicked its bucket and i am unable to replace it directly as the model is already expired/at the end of lifecycle.

i got myself a new router - Ubiquiti/Unifi Express 7 router.

My current internet is Broadband / FTTC. I am planning to upgrade to FTTP shortly (in next few months).

I copied the details from this page (How to connect to broadband using your own router | Help | Plusnet) and I checked the detail of broadband setting in my plusnet account.

i put all those details into Unifi Express 7 router but it doesn't connect at all. That puzzled me. I searched this forum and they said that it's resolved if I just copied correct detail from connection part of my account. I did that but I have no idea why. I attach screenshot of my Unifi Express 7 router's log in detail, in case someone may spot something amiss that i fail to see.

Yes i put VLAN to 101, and I also switch it off. Both options don't make any difference to me as both won't connect to internet. It suggests that the issue is something else?

(please note that I remove my plusnet username and password in the screenshot for this forum).

Thanks in advance.

Carl

@ironman234

If you are FTTC, what are you using for a modem?

Unifi Express Router 7. It has got integrated modem. It's just like my old and dead router which has integrated modem and router.

I can't see any modem specs in the tech details.

The technical specs of Unifi Express 7 router can be found at: UniFi Express 7 - Ubiquiti Store United Kingdom

You need to click on technical spec on that web page to see all technical spec.

Thanks,

Carl

I had read that - still can't see any reference to modem capability.

That doesn't have a modem

Re: Ubiquiti or Unifi Express 7 Router - login detail

I have a Unifi Express 7 (UX7) and plusnet FTTC, the UX7 does not have a modem in it. The best setup is to put the Plusnet router into bridge mode and then connect the UX7 to the Plusnet router. You can use any of the Plusnet router LAN ports to the UX7 WAN port. You then need to use PPPoE on the UX7 with your plusnet username and password, no need for any VLAN settings on the WAN setup.

When you move to FTTP, you should be able to do away with the plusnet router and connect the UX7 straight to the ONT using ethernet.

Re: Ubiquiti or Unifi Express 7 Router - login detail

Just like my old TP link router, Unifi Express 7 is a cloud gateway. Cloud gateway is a combination of modem and router. And it does support PPPoE.

Maybe you're probably thinking of older model called "Unifi Express"? (UniFi express doesn't have modem unlike Unifi Express 7).

Re: Ubiquiti or Unifi Express 7 Router - login detail

Can you point us to any reference in the Unifi Express 7 specifications of a modem?

I think @jrhopkins00 post above (as an actual user) makes it clear that it is merely a router.

Re: Ubiquiti or Unifi Express 7 Router - login detail

@ironman234 I had the Unifi Express before I had the Unifi Express 7 and neither have a modem in them, for FTTC both require the Plusnet to do the modem part. Please provide any links where you think either UX/UX7 has a modem.

If you go to the official Unifi Assistant chat GPT it states that there is no modem.

Re: Ubiquiti or Unifi Express 7 Router - login detail

Thanks @jrhopkins00

That is very helpful guide! Yes I can do that with hub 2 as temporarily while i am on FTTC, until I move over to FTTP which I can then remove hub 2 and plug ONT cable into UX7 directly. I better search this forum how to put hub 2 as bridge mode as I am not expert on hub 2 itself.

Re: Ubiquiti or Unifi Express 7 Router - login detail

I was at the web page of unifi express 7 and I saw this photo which implied that it can be connected to internet directly which made me think that it got a router. I attach screenshot from the official web page of UX7.

Re: Ubiquiti or Unifi Express 7 Router - login detail

No problem @ironman234 happy to help. Putting the plusnet router into bridge mode is just done in the web interface. You will lose the ability to connect to it after, but that’s normal. When you plug it into the UX7 and enter PPPoE credentials it should connect and you won’t need to connect to plusnet router again. If you do you will have to plug in a laptop to one of the LAN ports and manually configure IP, as you won’t get a DHCP IP. Or you can always factory reset the router.

Re: Ubiquiti or Unifi Express 7 Router - login detail

It can do via Ethernet using PPPoE, DHCP from ISP etc. It just doesn’t have a modem for VDSL/FTTC.
