Telephone socket on back of router two

I am looking at renewing my contract. with plusnet without the telephone line, which I have always had. The problem being I have a dialler unit connected to my phone line for the house alarm. I see on the rear of the router is a telephone socket. Can this be actived to work via the router. I belieave the BT router, which this is a version of, can be activated. Is there any way this can be done on the Plusnet version. I have been a plusnet user for many years but also donot want to loose my alarm dialler function while renewing my contract.

The phone socket on the Hub2 is inactive.

@bodmas  Welcome to the Plusnet Community Fora.

You can’t connect an analogue dialler unless you have a phone service. If you ring the Plusnet Customer Options Team on 0800 013 2632 you can probably extend your current internet and phone service contract.

Within the next year or so you will need to address your dialler problem, possibly by converting to a digital version.

Ideally you would replace your analogue phone dialler with an ethernet equivalent that communicates via the internet.

 

However, many people have had success in buying an "ATA" (Analogue Telephone Adaptor) intended to convert an existing phone handset to VoIP connected to a LAN port on a router, but instead plugging in their analogue DTMF alarm dialler.

 

These are the steps -

  1. Choose a third party VoIP provider - A&A is a good choice at £1.44 / month
  2. Buy an phone to VoIP ATA - Grandstream 801 looks popular, or find one that is known to work with your dialler
  3. Upgrade/renew your Plusnet FTTC (with phone) contract to Plusnet "Fibre" (SoGEA without phone) or "Full Fibre"
  4. AFTER the upgrade completes, you have 30 days to port your disconnected phone number to your VoIP provider.
  5. Configure your ATA VoIP something like this and this (or from many online tutorials)
  6. Plug in your dialler, and test it.

 

Doing this has the advantages of -

  • Keeping your existing phone number
  • Being ahead of the UK landline phone line switch off (by the end of 2025)
  • You wouldn't have to change your dialler
  • Your phone number is now independent of your phone exchange, so you can keep your number if you ever move
  • You can change broadband provider without being tied to an associated phone contract
  • You can change broadband technology, e.g. VDSL to FTTP, 4G/5G, Starlink, Virgin coax, etc
  • You can change your broadband router - without being restricted to a model with a phone socket
  • Your Plusnet contract without phone should be cheaper than what you're paying for now (if going FTTC to SoGEA).
