Re: Smart devices keep going offline

Thank you for your reply.
I can definitely do that but unfortunately I'd reset the hub again and disconnected the radiators so I'll have to reconnect them later this week and wait for them to go offline again.
I don't see a paper clip to attach anything though?

Re: Smart devices keep going offline

Oh right ok so they currently do have a static IP assigned then.
I can try changing the lease time then and see if that makes a difference.

@Townman

Setting the DHCP so the device always uses the same IP Address is not the same as setting a device with static IP Address, as the former would still make regular DHCP requests, even though the IP Address would be the same. I found the Hub Two IP addresses sticky and stay as was after a Hub reboot.

You need to be using a PC or if a tablet use 'Desktop site'

Are you posting from a mobile device? If so, select the desktop site from the drop-down.

Re: Smart devices keep going offline

Hi John, I am yes and not having much luck haha can't see a drop down to view as desktop site on my mobile.
I can log on using my Chromebook later though and have a look 🙂

@Simon_James

That's because it's not a drop down, touch the three dots top right corner, use 'Desktop site' is down towards the bottom.

Important, you need to be viewing the thread page for this setting to appear.

@Dan_the_Van

Have I confused semantics / terminology?

  • Dynamic - the device gets whatever IP address assigned by the DHCP from the available pool - it will be sticky so long as the lease is active
  • Static - the device (being pedantic, the MAC address) gets the same IP address reserved by DHCP
  • Fixed - the device has its address hard coded into its NIC's configuration

Re: Smart devices keep going offline

@Simon_James OK - it appears Safari doesn't like people using the desktop sites, but this link tells you how : https://www.reddit.com/r/iphone/comments/18xvba7/anyone_know_how_to_use_desktop_website_on_iphone/  - had to look myself because I  don't use Safari.

@jab1

Odd!

I use the desktop version of the community on my iPhone all of the time...

Click what looks like a screen and keyboard icon on the left of the page address bar.

Click the three dots bottom right.

Select 'Request Desktop / Mobile site'.

Re: Smart devices keep going offline

Thank you, will log on with my Chromebook later.
So is there a way of setting them with a static IP address other than what is set on the DHCP setting?

Re: Smart devices keep going offline

Not that I know of.

AFAIK / AFAIU addresses are defined as per my description above.

Static means that it is reserved by DHCP as in "Always use this address".

Many devices allow the specification of a fixed IP address within the device itself (as opposed to getting a DHCP managed address).  Such addresses should be outside of the range managed by DHCP.

For example, I have a customised DHCP pool 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.199 - therefore I would set fixed addresses in devices in the range 192.168.1.200 to 192.168.1.250 staying clear of the special addresses at the top of the subnet.

Re: Smart devices keep going offline

I'll have a play on the iPad later - I use Firefox on all my devices to keep things in sync, so as I said, I had to Google. I've never liked Safari.

Re: Smart devices keep going offline

@Townman

The problem is the Fixed could refer to either method as the end result is the same.

I always referred to a static IP Address which is manually setup on the device.#

@jab1

I would image a google chromebook would use google chrome and not Safari

But the OP is currently using a 'mobile device' - phone?

Anyway we digress, so I'm off. 😉
