Router Recommendations for Full Fibre 900 (wireless not needed)

Hi there,

I am going to be signing up with PN Full Fibre 900 service in the near future and want to start getting the kit I need ready for when it's installed.

What is the most reliable router for this service? I don't want anything with wi-fi on - just the routing bit.

Thanks for reading.

Try a Draytek 2927 (there is a non-wifi version) or perhaps a Ubiquiti UniFi UCG-Ultra Cloud Gateway Ultra Broadband Router.

Both will require some "learning" but should run trouble free for months or years.

To get the full 900Mb/s on the Draytek you will probably need to turn "hardware acceleration" on.

Equally you will need kit which can perform at that level ... which unless one is doing something very specialised is likely to be over kill.  Frankly in a residential setting, I do not understand the thirst for commercial grade infrastructures.  I recall the days when data centre links running at sub Gbit were over kill.

Re: Router Recommendations for Full Fibre 900 (wireless not needed)

There is a bit of a paradox here.

The ISP supplied routers (Plusnet's Hub 2 etc.) can do the throughput (I assume using hardware acceleration) but are not "feature rich".

It isn't the speed of my 145Mb/s Plusnet service which needs a Draytek, it is other functionality (for example an isolated network for things like the doorbell and other IoT things I don't trust) that makes a Draytek or similar desirable.

@raoulsilva

Given that WiFi is not required I see no problem with the PN Hub2 unless you want a Router with bells and whistles on it.

While you can do research I would suggest not doing anything until Full Fibre is installed and running and then see what may be required.

There is also the consideration of what kit one has presently and why it’s thought might not be suitable for the new service.  There’s an implied presumption of a bottleneck … but no context of what the user needs to support.  Throughput of what, network segregation how many devices doing what?

Re: Router Recommendations for Full Fibre 900 (wireless not needed)

Hi,

Thanks to everyone for posting.

I am sure the equipment Plusnet send out is up to the job (any idea who makes their kit?), otherwise they wouldn't use it.

I am not sure if they do the same as Virgin Media where their equipment is locked to their own DNS? I would rather use Cloudflare or Quad9.

I have Unifi access points around the house hence no need for wireless.

I am going to use OPNsense so will probably just keep the Plusnet router with as many functions turned off.

As you are in the Ubiquiti ecosystem their Cloud Gateway Ultra would be the obvious choice if you wanted to replace the Plusnet Hub. It's reasonably priced as well.
