Replacement router

Simple question but I'm sure I'll miss some important details that are required for a proper answer and for this I apologise in advance.

I'm still a FTTC customer and as our apartment block has not got FTTB or FTTP options this is currently my only option. I  registered interest in full fibre on the Openreach website well over 12 months ago but no signs of anything happening soon (or ever).

I am currently out of the UK and luckily when my router recently 'fell over' I was lucky enough to be able to talk my neighbour (who has a spare key) through rebooting it for me.

I appreciate the Hub Two is only a domestic device but could anyone advise what I may be able to replace it with that is more resilient, less domestic, or maybe has the ability to set a scheduled reboot. I'd also rather not contniue to use the Hub Two simply set to bridge mode as that is not removing the point of failure.

I do understand single point of failure etc. etc. and I have a very good background in IT networks.

Re: Replacement router

Any Hub may drop out not associated with the Hub reliability. If you want a scheduled reboot why not power the hub from a time switch that turns the power off for say 10-15 minutes at intervals of your choice, say daily or weekly?

Re: Replacement router

We have a Timeguard TG77 mains timer, in our case it controls an external lamp, it would be very easy to set it to
run a 7 days a week Power ON programme with a 1 or 2 mins of Power OFF each day at say 3am to reboot the Hub.

Re: Replacement router

Something from the Draytek range (possibly second hand) might be a good choice.

My experience over a decade or more is that Draytek routers can run for months.

I can't think of an occasion when I've needed to reboot other than for reasons of configuration changes I've made.

If you want remote access to devices on your local network when away, a model that supports Wireguard (newer models) might be worth considering.

Be careful as the routers come with or without WiFi depending on the exact model number.

@Tempting

If you are confident with hands on router config then consider the Mikrotik options.

https://mikrotik.com/products/group/wireless-for-home-and-office

Very powerful config and scripting facilities and capable of meeting your requirements.

Re: Replacement router

The problem with Mikrotik would be the complication of needing a VDSL modem as well.

It would, however, be extremely capable.

Something like a Draytek 2866ax would take a VDSL connection directly and replace the Plusnet Hub.
