Recommendation for a USB-C to Plusnet Hub 2 power cable

I am trying to set up a power bank (Ugreen Nexode 25,000mAh, Model PB722) to keep my internet running during a power cut. I am having difficulty in finding the correct adaptor to connect the router to the power bank.  From what I’ve found Plusnet use an unusual size power port, a 5.5 x 3.0mm which has an internal pin.  I believe the Hub Two is the same as a BT router, although I am unclear which BT router; some sources say  BT Smart Hub 2, others say Smart Hub 6.

My specifics are:  Plusnet Hub Two (Requires 12V power input, has the internal centre pin).   A Ugreen Nexode 25,000mAh, Model PB722 with usb c to usb c cable which supports 12V/3A output via Power Delivery).

I am looking for a single USB-C to 12V DC cable with the correct completely hollow (5.5mm x 3.1mm) barrel tip that slides cleanly over the router's pin.  If there is no such thing, then an adaptor to connect the router to the power bank via a USBC to USBC cable.  Not sure if we’re able to post links here, but if we are, then that would be really helpful.

@WorldMachine

I think you will struggle doing that with one cable, however ...

You could use USB-C to 5.5/2.1mm cable, with an adaptor to go from 5.5/2.1mm to 5.5/3.0mm, to achieve your goal ?

Fix

Thanks, I found that adapter on the toothbrush website this morning, so I will get that and take it from there.

Re: Recommendation for a USB-C to Plusnet Hub 2 power cable

Has anyone used one of these adaptors and can verify it works and plugs into the plusnet two hub?

Yes I have read the reviews,  just enquiring if anyone had used one.  I'll be ordering tomorrow. Thank you for the recommendation.

Re: Recommendation for a USB-C to Plusnet Hub 2 power cable

Fascinated to know, please post back, if this actually works. The specification for USB PD say that it starts at 5V and there is then a DIGITAL negotiation to determine the safe compatible voltage. I can't see a PN Hub 2 doing any of that, it's surely designed for a "dumb" 12v supply?

@HPsauce

If you follow the above link to the USB-C to 5.5/2.1mm DC cables on Amazon

The listing shows a variety of cables which appear to be 'pre-programmed' to be 5V, 9V, 12V, 15V, or 20V at the DC plug.

I hope that they are marked with the voltage in some way, otherwise owning different cables could get confusing !

@ExForce9 Indeed what you say is sort of implied but not clearly stated, hence my scepticism.

The listing also says "Frequently returned due to compatibility issues" so the outcome will be interesting.

In theory it ought to be possible as USB-PD supports various voltages, normally IIRC 5V, 9V, 15V and 20V. 12V seems to be "optional". (My Apple iPhone chargers only have 5V and 9V but they don't need more)

@HPsauce

I did see the "frequently returned" banner, which is odd given that there are no negative reviews - mostly 5 stars.

Re: Recommendation for a USB-C to Plusnet Hub 2 power cable

The adapter is on its way.  It's only a fiver so I can afford for it to not work.   I am aware of the volt issue and the Nexode power bank has variable voltage levels so it can be adjusted.  I had already bought the converter cable and set of adapters (the adapters weren't the right type but I hopefully will be able to use the cable).  https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0GD716J8J

When it arrives I have time to set it up I will post back of the outcome.

There were only a few reviews, which makes me wonder.  I think you need to take the Amazon reviews with a pinch of salt - a few reviews can easily be entered by friends / family / employees...  I tend to disregard reviews where there are not hundreds of reviews - just have to decide if it's worth the chance - what the cost is, who deals with returns and who is selling the items.

Hopefully it will be fine.

Re: Recommendation for a USB-C to Plusnet Hub 2 power cable

@WorldMachine That Amazon unit looks ideal though I'm surprised the 5.5/3.0mm connector doesn't fit; seems better than the cables linked earlier, good luck. 😀

Incidentally I checked the spec of my latest Apple USB-C power bricks and they provide up to 35W at 20v/15v/9v/5v but NOT 12v.

Re: Recommendation for a USB-C to Plusnet Hub 2 power cable

The adapter arrived yesterday and it fits.  I connected it up to the power bank and cable and it all works.  There is a small box on the cable which gives you the voltage, it defaults to 5.0 and the correct voltage for the router is 12.  I unplugged the cable from power bank and put it back in and the cable box has a memory as it was still set at 12.  But I don’t know if this memory is time limited so essential to check when connecting it again.

Thanks to ExForce9 for the recommendation
