Port forwarding on Hub2 router for work VPN

Hi

I've tried calling Plusnet but they have been unable to resolve this.

I am having difficulty connecting to works VPN - Always on VPN.

My work ICT team have said my laptop is attempting to connect to vpn server outbound on udp ports 500 and udp ports 4500

Support have said I need to set up port forwarding to open up the ports but could offer no further help.

Could someone help with an idiots guide of how I would set this up on port forwarding please

Many thanks

@Tulip_Witch

Welcome to the forum.

Plusnet supplied Hubs and other domestic off the shelf routers would not block those outbound ports.

Port forwarding rules are only required for inbound NOT outbound ports, so I suggest your ICT team need a rethink of the possible cause of your issue.

Ask them to check if they can see your attempts to connect.

There maybe been issues with some VPN where the user has not closed the VPN connection gracefully, turning off the PC rather than disconnecting the VPN first. So an attempt to connect again fails as the VPN server sees a ghost connection and stop the connection from the same IP Address.

Re: Port forwarding on Hub2 router for work VPN

Hi

Thank you for the reply.

It is the connection to VPN that is the issue.  I can connect using wifi at other locations and I can connect using hotspot.

I have been advised this by Plusnet.  They sent me a Hub 2 as they said this would open up the ports automatically.

Thanks

Hi,

Have you advised your ICT team that you have a new router which has the necessary ports open?

If they try pushing back again I suggest they look further into you VPN connection attempts when at home.

You can give them you current broadband IP Address, it is found here

@Tulip_Witch

Have you checked the Plusnet firewall settings in the member centre?

https://www.plus.net/member-centre/broadband/firewall

These need to be set to Low for VPNs to work

Once this is set the router needs to be rebooted  for the settings to take effect

You can check out but you can never leave ( easily)
