Re: New FTTP with variable speed

Yes the location of the Router was changed to the opposite corner of the same room.

That could mean that the router is now closer to adjacent properties and their wifi is interfering. There's an option on the Hub 2 to do a wifi channel rescan to find the channel with the least interference.

However, i dont use the Hub 2 so we'll have to wait for someone who does to detail the procedure

Re: New FTTP with variable speed

In theory, you should leave the master socket in place as it belongs to Openreach, @Bamboozled , but I doubt they would care if you removed it.

Re: New FTTP with variable speed

Update

1) I hadnt realised how varied the Wifi speeds are . I can use Ookla and get 320 mbs , then go again immediately and get 55. Is there an App where I can monitor it constantly please. Ill give it a try if there is

2) Wife virtually sat on top of Router keeps getting messages on Ipad (fairly new) such as "Poor Internet Connection - you cant access the News when Offline"

3) Could the Router need replacing as Ive had it a long time ?

Should I turn off Router for a period to see if that helps although I did have a Power cut of 1 hour recently

Ditto ... should I turn off ONT for a while , but again I had the same power cut  of an hour a couple of weeks ago

Re: New FTTP with variable speed

@Bamboozled Re: the wife's iPad - that is really strange, my iPad and iPhone are not exactly new, but both maintain a perfect connection at max speed, even when upstairs at the opposite side of the house.

Re: New FTTP with variable speed

@jab1

hi again ... yes it is strange and I wouldnt have known of the very variable speed if it wasnt for Wife reporting it , and would have just assumed the new set up was in A1 condition

Maybe the recent suggestion of our new Router position taking it closer to the property on our right side could be correct

We are further from the house on the left but even the one on the right is about 30 feet outside wall to outside wall but I have no idea where their Router is positioned

Re: New FTTP with variable speed

Just a wild idea, but having had Apple kit that occasionally exhibits strange behaviour - try totally turning off the iPad - power down - and restart it from scratch, it is amazing what problems that simple action can eradicate.

Re: New FTTP with variable speed

@Bamboozled

Long Cat 5e Ethernet cables aren’t expensive. As an experiment, you could use one between the ONT and router and put the router back in to its original location.

If that solves the issue you could think about a neater, permanent, installation.

Re: New FTTP with variable speed

@Baldrick1

hi again . Another good idea . Probably give that a try

Also liaised with neighbour and our 2 modems are about 30 feet apart now as against maybe 45 feet. He isnt having any problems (that hes noticed) but somewhere above someone suggested resetting my Router but as he doesnt use a Hub 2 he didnt know how it could be done and suggested someone would give the answer here

Cheers again jt

Re: New FTTP with variable speed

@MisterW

Hi , I just saw neighbour by chance and he has not had any obvious problems since my Installation but he is not in all day every day so he may have problems without knowing

His router is closer to mine by about 12 feet to 15 feet but is still a good 30 to 35 feet away . Dont know if that is near enough for his wifi to interfere with mine ?

If it is I could try the move you outlined earlier if someone outline what I need to do

Cheers againjt

Re: New FTTP with variable speed

@Bamboozled

Best performed on a desktop PC.

Click on this link http://192.168.1.254  and navigate to ->Advanced settings -->Wireless

H2 - Advanced Settings - Wireless (advanced wireless).png

A Rescan may select another channel or if you click on the box in my example Smart (Channel 6) you can manually select 1, 6 or 11, using a different channel to that being displayed.

There is an event log which might detail what happening with your wifi

->Advanced settings -->Technical log ---> Event log - select Category 'WIFI' export and attach the file to a post using the paper clip below the post window.

@Dan_the_Van

Hi thanks for the interest and reply and of course the diagram of "what to do" which I will try later. i will let you know for sure if it works.

I cant promise to get round to it today , but as the actual problem is only affecting Wifes IPad it can wait a while but not of course forever lol

Right so a change is that a couple of TV's are now running over wifi.  Is it Sky ?

Any wifi/ powerline adaptors too ?

Sky TV's and boxes set up their own wifi networks and might be clashing with your attempts to access the internet as they constantly download programmes they think you might want to watch.

With powerlines on top of TV's you can end up with very many wifi networks that might have the same name and enough band 'splatter' to not leave ANY free space for your devices

Re: New FTTP with variable speed

@mwwagain

Hi and many thanks for the reply. Ive been unavailable since Saturday and so unable to reply.

I do have 2 Smart Tvs both can now run on Wifi but the second one is in my "man cave" for want of a better description but has been on only once to ensure it picked up the wifi , and it did but tbf the Router is just about the same distance from it as it always before the Router moved positions

The Living Room TV is again about the same distance from the Router but whereas it was connected to Router via Ethernet Cable now it runs exactly the same way as Laptop Phone Tablets etc

I dont have Sky TV but do have Now TV via App on Smart TV

Many thanks again JT

Re: New FTTP with variable speed

@Dan_the_Van

Hi Dan .... many thanks again for your reply. Ive been dragged here and there since my last reply and coupled to the fact that my Wife was not "reporting" to me as often I delayed looking at your "fix"

I opened it with fear - fear of messing up that is. Had it been "turn off Router or OTP box and leave for 30 minutes " I would have done it by now probably lol

But I gave it a look at and have a couple of (very simple I expect Questions) and will be glad of your reply .

1 ) I didnt know the number to enter when I first opened the Link. Is it a generic 0000 or 1234 or similar. Cant think I would have changed anything

2 ) Do I actually click in the Box where it says Channel 6. I presume yes and expect there will be a drop down showing the options

3 ) If I have got this far do I also need to do something similar with the Box that is showing Channel 36 in your example

Sorry if you are now laughing so much your ribs are aching ... but I do know that little !

Amazing that a mate of mine not far away sees me as his Guru LOL

Cheers JT
