Netgear R7000 compatibility with hub2

Hey guys, I'm having an issue I can't seem to resolve.
I have full fibre using the hub 2, but I'm finding the range of the wifi just isnt quite up to the task for my lan, i work from home and like to keep mobile so i can switch rooms.
I did have hopes of using my own router, to extend the range, I was using my netgear r7000 with my virgin before switching to plusnet. However, for some reason I can't seem to get an Internet connection with the r7000 (I have put the hub2 in bridge mode, set up pppoe and still no connection.)
I know the r7000 is a 10year old piece of kit, but I wanted to confirm that it was possible before buying a new router with WiFi 6... long story short, is this a compatibility issue or have I done something wrong along the way?
Thanks in advance.

Not sure what you are trying to do, but there is no need to use the Hub2, just use PPOE with your PN username and password and connect the R7000 direct to the ONT.

The r7000 doesn't have a modem built in though, or do I not need one if I have the ONT?

@andrew365

If you are on full fibre then you do not need the hub 2 at all. Connect the R7000 directly to the Openreach ONT. Set the R7000 to PPPoE, enter your Plusnet account username@plusdsl.net and account username. If you have the option, VLAN should be left blank or Off.

Edit,

You do not need a modem with full fibre

@andrew365   the ONT is basically a modem, albeit a fibre one.

Re: Netgear R7000 compatibility with hub2

This is brilliant news!

I went over to Full Fibre in September. All went well, using Hub 2 with a wireless extender but I want to get get the system set up so that there's a really good signal everywhere I want, before I secure ethernet cabling (our bungalow is rather long and because of where the ONT has been installed, most of the powerline adaptors I'd been using are on different circuits now and not playing with each other!).

I thought I would add in old routers as access points etc but apart from a very old one which I have been using as an ethernet hub, I haven't been successful in logging into the others to reconfigure them too, despite resetting them to factory settings.

The newest is a Netgear R7000 which I was using with FTTC before I requested the Hub 2 when I renewed my contract a year or two ago, so I will try plugging that directly into the ONT and see if that works, then in theory I should be able to get another earlier one reconfigured to connect up with that too! Wish me luck!

Very often the reason for this is because the computer used still has an active connection via another path to the main router. The device used must be set so  that it can only connect to the router that you are trying to reconfigure as an Access Point. The safest way is to switch off the main router whilst you do this and save the settings.

Re: Netgear R7000 compatibility with hub2

Thanks
I turned off wi-fi to the Plusnet router and tried while connected to the Netgear router seperately via wi-fi and by ethernet, as well as trying to use the Nighthawk and Genie apps from my phone.

I variously got the connection to the login page timing out, 'forbidden' messages (which may have been down to security software that I've since removed as it started messing up other things when it last updated, depite uninstalling and reinstalling from scratch which usually fixes update problems!) and 'server not found' messages.

Anyway, as it appears the Netgear R7000 can connect directly to the FTTP ONT, I will attempt to set that up as the main router instead and convert the Hub2 (and/or an older Netgear D7000) to an access point. Not too much of a problem at the moment, but I want to get a decent speed connection to our newish smart TV as well as to our computers.

Re: Netgear R7000 compatibility with hub2

@Baldrick1, a bit more playing around and I discovered it was actually the Firefox browser that was the problem. Should have tried that earlier!

Using Chrome instead, I've successfully logged into my trusty old Netgear D7000 and set it up as as a wireless access point, which means I can move things round again to get a wired connection for some IOT devices that were losing their wireless connection now and again (they were previously connected via powerline adaptors but the router's now on a different circuit).

I'll set up the R7000 as and when but at least I now know not to try to do it using Firefox!
