Landline

Can someone confirm that I can plug my digital home phone directly into the back of a router 2  if I change  to fftp. A neighbour has done this and kept his phone number but he is with bt. I am 75yrs old and don't have or want to just use  a. mobile phone. I am having no luck getting through to Plusnet to ask without  hanging on for more than 30minutes  Help would be much appreciated.

@parko50 No you can't I'm afraid. Plusnet are not providing a digital voice service. If you wish to move to FTTP and retain a phone service then are some options;-

1) take FTTP from PLusnet and arrange a third party VOIP (digital voice) service and obtain some voip hardware

2) Plusnet will offer to transfer you to EE for FTTP and digital voice with a suitable router

3) Arrange a transfer yourself to another supplier (such as Zen) who can provide FTTP and digital voice and a suitable router

Note that both options 2 & 3 mean that you will lose access to your Plusnet email , athough if you delay the move to FTTP until Aug/Sep then maybe not...

Option 3 MAY incur Early termination charges if you are still in contract.

Re: Landline

I still need a lkandline/numner so ported that voice service to voipfone £6/month for 100 minutes and also purchased a pre configured adaptor from them for £75 (Grandstream HT801) The adaptor is unlocked and can be reconfigured.

The voice line/number was transferred to voipfone just after FTTP went live

The process was:

Sign up to Voiphone on a free trial, timed at a couple of weeks before the plusnet install date, and purchased a Voip adaptor from them soon after - pre-configured to my account.

When the voip adaoptor arrived i tested it on my (previous) non fttp connection, and it worked it was just a case of plugging it into  one of the routers Ethernet jacks, and finding a USB to micro USB lead to power it from the routers usb socket.

When the FTTP went live, i then transferred the landline number to my voipfone account, plugged the voipfone supplied granstream adaptor into the routers Ethernet socket ( for data) and USB ( for power) and plugged a landline phone into the phone socket with the supplied adaptor from voipfone, and it all works fine.

So right now, Broadband/internet form plusnet, phone service form Voipfone if i cahnge internet provider then the voice service is not affected, if i want to change phone provider from voipfone to andrews arnold ( for example)  the broadband is not affected.

The only downside is that you will need a voip provider as opposed to one provided by an ISP such as Sky/Talk Talk/EE/BT/Vodafone and going independent on the voice side is often cheaper than bundled, you can still sign up with any isp ( including those examples) and keep your voice service running through the adaptor  and should be paying less than the  ISPs charge
